He has a degree in economics from the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. Before taking up his position as Governor of the Banco de Portugal, he was Executive Director of Banco Português de Investimento from 1995 to 2000, and Non-Executive Director of Electricidade de Portugal, the Portuguese national power utility, from 1998 to 2000.
On May 29, 2003, through an audit conducted by SGS ICS was assigned to E.T.E. - Electricity and Telecommunications Company Ltd the Certificate of Compliance in accordance with the European standard NP EN ISO 9001 2000 referring to provide services in facilities use of Electrical Energy Networks Electricity Distribution in Low and Medium Voltage and Telecommunications Infrastructures.
He graduated in Economics from the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. Before taking up his position as Governor of the Banco de Portugal, he was Executive Director of Banco Português de Investimento from 1995 to 2000 and Non-Executive Director of Electricidade de Portugal (EDP), the Portuguese national power utility, from 1998 to 2000.
The main activities of EDA are the generation, acquisition, transmission, distribution and commercialization of electric power in the nine islands of Azores. The Regional Government of Azores granted a concession to EDA, for a period of 50 years, starting on 12th of October 2000, for the transmission and distribution of electric power in the Autonomous Region of Azores and also for the management of the electric system.
EDA is the parent company of a group of companies with the purpose of generation of electric power in the Autonomous Region of Azores. EDA RENOVÁVEIS and GEOTERCEIRA (both companies majority owned by EDA) are responsible for the production of electric power through the collection and transformation of geothermic heat. EDARENOVÁVEIS has two power plants in the island of S. Miguel with an installed capacity of 23MW. GEOTERCEIRA was created in 2000 with the purpose of establishing a geothermal power plant in the island of Terceira. There is a concession agreement granted by the Autonomous Region of Azores to EDA RENOVÁVEIS, on an exclusive basis, for the exploitation of geothermal resources in the Municipality of Ribeira Grande in the Island of São Miguel. The term of the concession is 25 years, having started on 14th of July 1995. There is a concession agreement granted from the Autonomous Region of Azores to GEOTERCEIRA, on an exclusive basis, for the exploration and research in the geothermal field of Pico Alto in the Island of Terceira.
Our dataset comprises annual power generation and import data for 209 countries covering the period 2000 to 2020. For 2021, we have added data for 75 countries which together represent 93% of global power demand. You can download the data or use our Data Explorer.
Growth in bioenergy, hydro and nuclear in the last 20 years was led by China. Since 2000, China has provided two-thirds of the global growth in hydro generation, all the net growth of nuclear, and a third of the growth in bioenergy. The majority of the growth in hydro outside China was in India, Brazil and Russia. The majority of the growth in bioenergy outside China was in the UK, Japan, India and Brazil.
This report analyses annual power generation and import data for 209 countries from 2000 to 2020, with 2021 data included for 75 countries representing 93% of global power demand. Data is collected from multi-country datasets (EIA, Eurostat, BP, UN) as well as national sources (e.g China data from the National Bureau of Statistics). The latest annual generation data is estimated using monthly generation data. Annual capacity data is collected from GEM, IRENA and WRI, and is included for as many countries as it is available for.
Compiling a full dataset from 2000 to 2021 requires using data at multiple timescales. Annual generation data is collected from both national and multi-country sources. For the most recent years, data is often not available. In these cases we use monthly data, which is reported on a shorter lag, to estimate the latest annual generation.
