Its that time of year....the sun brings resurgence in all its forms across the northern hemisphere, the plants release their sweet scents, all wonder crawls out into the light....and Switzerland (unconsciously) puts its fantastically arch and ramshackle gang Roy & the Devil’s Motorcycle on the road to confuse, infuse and play the punk blues across Europe. See bio/links below for more info on them. The Staehli bros. and Alain are on the autobahn and hopefully near you 6th to 21st April – see confirmed dates below. This time they come to bring you their 2 releases on Voodoo Rhythm records – OUT THIS WEEK –in lush VR vinyl and CD.
1. 3rd album TELL IT TO THE PEOPLE is a patchwork earworm masterpiece, carefully and slowly (as ever) nurtured into existence over the past 3 years in the Roy’s home studio in a peaceful Swiss hamlet. Found-sounds, tape cuts and new member Alain Perret-Gentils psychedelic fx combine space with the earthy pulse of the Staehli Bros incomparably warped-but-focused guitars. They channel unbounded electric jazz punk energy (I’M ALRIGHT), a mysterious pulsing whispering-heartbreak doo wop cover (TEARS ON MY PILLOW) sweeter than alpine honey tremolo-love songs (WATER AIR FOOD AND LOVE) and swirling subconscious psychic-blues energy (CASEY JONES, HENRY’S BLUES). check it here: http://soundcloud.com/roydmc/02-im-alright
2. Impossible to get hold of for the last 10 years, VR are rereleasing the bands vicious, sprawling 1998 debut FORGOTTEN MILLION SELLERS. Its a peaking rush of distortion and teenage punk aggression stretched-out with intoxicating insanity and freewheeling experimentation. the proof is in the (blood red) pudding. Tape hiss and a real not-giving-a-f*ck glues it all together with such direct howling and laughter, nothing is out of place. A deep love of blues turned into analogue art by fearless European avant-punks that makes Jon Spencer sound like Joni Mitchell. My highlight is MOTORWAY – 2 minutes of the stooges playing 3 songs-in-one, LOUD as a helicopter in a bunker fronted by a European no-wave-punk channelling everything, high and low. ROY AND THE DEVIL’S MOTORCYCLE
Warped and beautiful garage-blues from three alpine voodoo brothers. Roy & the Devil's Motorcycle are a four piece from the middle of Switzerland. Legendary in their own circles, for the last 20 years they have gained obsessive fans, freaked out untold numbers and enjoyed most every Sunday playing together. The three brothers all play guitar and have somehow tapped into a powerful group-psychic force of earth and fire: its solid but you can’t grab hold of it.
Initially their influences seem obvious: old dusty blues records, dirty garage rock, Spacemen 3, Link Wray…..but dig deeper and their love of Lee Perry, Souled American, No Wave, Red Krayola, Godz (amongst many others) along with a true avant garde sensibility starts to show. They can be the best live band you'll ever see; a fluid conduit for whatever magic can come out of them and where they are at that point in time, where the audience is at that point in time. If you’re ready, they’ll fill you with outsider joy and rush you through a maelstrom of psychic power.
