Today marks the 25th anniversary of strategy classic Age Of Empires, and to celebrate Xbox Game Studios have announced a ream of updates coming to Age Of Empires II: Definitive Edition next year. Technically, the main bit of news from tonight's anniversary stream is that both Age Of Empires II: DE and Age Of Empires IV will be arriving on Xbox consoles in 2023 (that, and Age Of Mythology is coming back), but the upshot of all that is that the PC versions will be getting the very same benefits, including controller support, crossplay with consoles and cloud gaming support.
Age Of Empires II: Definitive Edition will be arriving on Xbox consoles on January 31st 2023, with Age Of Empires IV following "later" that year. While I'm sure many PC AOE-ers will continue to use a mouse and keyboard to play these real-time strategy games, it's always nice to see more input options become available. It also sounds like Xbox have put a decent amount of thought into making them a viable option, too.
"We knew that bringing the complexity of RTS to Xbox consoles was a massive task and one we had to approach carefully and thoughtfully," director of customer voice at World's Edge Emma Bridle wrote on the Xbox News Wire.
As mentioned above, Age Of Empires II: Definitive Edition will also be getting optional crossplay support between all platforms when the console edition arrives, allowing PC peeps to play with Xbox-ers. Plus, if you're an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriber and fancy squeezing in some more AOE on your phone or laptop via your web browser, then it will also be able to play through Xbox Cloud Gaming, too.
These new additions have all been highly-requested features from players themselves, according to Bridle, who she called "the beating heart of the franchise" in our new 25th anniversary interview with the World's Edge development team. Nic Reuben spoke to both Bridle and creative director Adam Isgreen about how the series has evolved over the last quarter century, and it's chock full of fascinating insights.
Age of Empires IV released as a PC exclusive but is available on both Steam and the Microsoft Store, which is where crossplay questions usually stem from. Purchasing the game on one storefront only to find yourself unable to play against or alongside friends who bought it on the other would be quite frustrating.
The feature was also present in Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and, if AoE 4 is anything like it, Microsoft Store/Xbox Game Pass players should have an Xbox symbol next to their name in the lobby, while Steam players should have a planet symbol.
Before Imperium joined the Imperials and became the Crossplay branch it was an other team. Imperium was founded in May 5th of 2020 by EmperorThas. It started in a small Anarchy Realm. Later on that Ream became a server, and then another servers. Imperium was very unsuccessful due to all the members being new to anarchy and all the old players targeting them. But the leader never gave up and carried on. Eventually the team got destroyed in the 2nd server during mid June. They moved to 4b4t, a crossplay server. There they farmed the old players which gave the team loot because they wanted to inside. Imperium had no intentions of war and just played along. Then their old server got rebranded to Aurora Anarchy and became a crossplay server too. Imperium had a branch in 3 servers back then and Aurora became the 4th one. Aurora started going very well and the 4b4t project was abandoned. The other branches where also ineffective and Imperium moved to their home server. They left 4b4t wealthy. In Aurora they started getting attacked by the older anarchy players but this time they could fight back. A few battles were won but the army was still ineffective. The team continued building their bases. They made a very close ally called Externium which was the first major team except Imperium to side against the "moles" (a term used for anti-imps created by 100VIC). After some time the server was dying and Imperium started playing less. The CPE invasion took place which Imperium was the only team to side with CPE-fags. They protected them and carried them to their base. After the leader was busy running a server a new regent was given power. There was a big struggle and confusion which opened a power gap in the team where an unfair election was hosted by the Regent to take power. After he won the vote, he broke his promises to the team and the Ministers that supported him where all traitors placed there by him. This happened throughout end August and the start of September. EmperorThas was kicked from the discord and mocked, this ended SWW1 as a defeat for Imperium. A new discord was made and the it quickly passed the other team which was a troll. That was the start of a new era. Imperium started Operation United and merged with many new neutral teams and even Externium. They formed the New Anarchy Empire. EmperorThas successfully started a military and it seemed that by 1-2 week they where the most powerful in the server. The a invasion from 4b4t came which was the first battle. They attempted to portal trap Imperium through a very smart trick. Ektor then alone defeated both Woomyaidan and Reeeeboim8 in the portal trap. This was the start of Imperium militarism. In the following month Imperium made 3 puppet states and created a powerful military which was unstoppable, the oldest teams were being destroyed in daily. By the end of November Imperium had full control. Imperium won SWW2 when Team Woomy was defeated, the Nazi capital self griefed because Imperium troops were 1 hour away and Grove being destroyed fully. Imperium fixed its military and made an alliance with its sub team Azurite. The puppet states had merged but then a member of the Irish Empire, the same CPE team that betrayed them, and their major trade ally attacked Imperium. ZeusTesla was fighting Imperium for 1 month which he was losing 80% of the time. At Christmas day, the Irish Empire decarded war to Imperium with the help of the Nazis, Oasis and Azurite which betrayed Imperium. The battle of New Constantinople took place in Imperium's main base which ended to a defeat for Imperium. This was the first major defeat in months. The Imperium highway was abandoned and a new one made since the whole server was using it due to it being the longest and best one. While Imperium was making the new base, DaBigBanksTheory found the shared base of Oasis and Irish. He griefed it immediately and it was overrun by Imperium troops. All the members run away and logged. Imperium then spared them and let them go. Imperium reorganized and then fought back, ZeusTesla was destroyed and along him Villagers654, owner of Oasis and of the server. Eventually Team Woomy came back and allied with Imperium. They funded the team with unlimited totem which was the only resource Imperium lacked. SWW3 was being won by Imperium, soon Team Woomy betrayed Imperium when they where asked for help at spawn, they turned against Imperium and the army was destroyed. Later that week Imperium invaded CPE+ and destroyed all the oldfags and took over. They returned to Aurora again and found an Azurite base. Imperium went there and instead of griefing allied with Azurite. The Irish Empire, Azurite and Ducks all made peace with Imperium ending SWW3. Imperium was still at war with Team Woomy, Nazis and Oasis. The Nazis military got destroyed by Imperium a few months back so they never even went close to spawn. Team Woomy was the major enemy but Imperium was winning most of the time. Oasis had also lost its power and just funded Team Woomy with egaps. Imperium did not have any egaps with made the war hard. Eventually a few battles came which where defeats and wins, EmperorThas had to retire. Team Woomy and Imperium got together and had a party. Imperium then moved to Optimum Anarchy with the leadership of Manlikearisto. Imperium then merged with Imperials and EmperorThas got power again. After Optimum Anarchy collapsed then subsequently shut down, Imperium moved back to Aurora Anarchy. They were briefly active there, but eventually became completely inactive, then dying off completely once ownership was transferred from Thas to Aristo again.
The Age of Empires franchise is a titan of the RTS genre. A mark of an excellent game is one that players feel they can't put down. Age of Empires certainly fits the bill in that regard. The series' influence is such that many other games over the years have taken inspiration from the vaunted franchise. For fans who can't get enough of Age of Empires, plenty of alternatives populate the market.
These games focus on city-building, RTS combat, grand strategy, or a combination of all three. AoE fans will be more than satisfied with the wealth of games that have taken inspiration from this series time and time again. This has allowed a wealth of RTS games that have built upon the series' basics while adding unique spins of their own to keep players interested in the long run. While some games are clearly inspired by Age of Empires, others do their own thing with varying levels of success. Both types of strategy games are worthwhile for players who want to either stick to something familiar or try something new and interesting.

The captivating gameplay loop is something that fans have loved for years, with the popularity of Age of Empires 2 compelling Microsoft to provide regular updates to the game even now. Along with this, the announcement of a new Age of Empires game was met with adulation from the masses, who couldn't wait to see a modern take on this form of gameplay. While some people felt that the fourth game tried too hard to emulate the success of the second without adding anything new to the formula, it's still a brilliant game that most fans will enjoy to bits.
