By providing interesting research projects, the N-Body Shop participates in Pre-Map, a UW Astronomy department initiative. Pre-Map introduces undergrad students to astronomical research early in their college careers. By providing them with academic advising and one-on-one mentorship through their first year, Pre-MAP aims to give underrepresented students the motivation and tools to succeed in our field. Our grad students also regularly participate in Astronomy on Tap, a series of national public events that feature accessible, engaging science presentations on topics ranging from planets to black holes to the beginning of the Universe.

We are focusing on the formation and growth of supermassive black holes (2017 graduate Michael Tremmel), the reionization of the Universe by small dwarf galaxies (2016 graduate Lauren Anderson), the effects of non standard Dark Matter on the observable properties of galaxies (2015 graduate Alexander Fry) and the formation of giant planets (2017 graduate Isaac Backus) and circumbinary planets (2020 graduate David Fleming).

Information presented in this publication is intended to provide a general understanding of the statutory and regulatory requirements governing automotive repair and auto body shops. Certain wastes common to automotive repair and auto body shops are considered special wastes. Special wastes include hazardous waste, pollution control waste, and industrial process waste. Hazardous waste is a type of special waste. A waste can be classified as hazardous if it (1) is listed on the Illinois EPA hazardous waste list, or (2) exhibits one of the following characteristics: ignitability, toxicity, corrosivity or reactivity. An industrial process waste is any liquid, solid, semisolid, or gaseous waste generated when manufacturing a product or performing a service. Common waste streams may include used oil, used antifreeze, used solvents/paints/and coatings, used absorbents, used batteries, and used tires.

Wastewater is often generated by operations such as the rinsing of parts, and the washing down of engines or dirty tools. If water becomes mixed with oil, antifreeze, solvents, or other liquids, it is important that it be properly treated and contained prior to discharge.

A National Pollutant Discharge Elimination permit from Illinois EPA is required for business owners that discharge their power washing wastewater directly into a water body. If wastewater is discharged to a sanitary sewer system, the business owners must apply for a state construction permit and may also need to apply for a state operating permit. If your shop is discharging large quantities of wastewater into the municipal sewage system, you may be required to get a permit from your local wastewater treatment plant.

Automotive repair and auto body shops are subject to a number of air pollution regulations, and may be required to obtain permits depending on the type of activities conducted, the amount of materials used, and the location of the shop.

Any auto body shop using methylene chloride for paint stripping operations is regulated under Section 13 of the Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Source Categories (7 DE Admin. Code, 1138).

Those facilities which emit 0.2 pounds per day or more, but less than 10 pounds per day, are required to register their pollution-causing equipment. Accurate detailed record-keeping is required to establish and maintain registration status.

The Brockton police narcotics unit executed a search warrant at D&G Auto Body, at 8 Perkins St., about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Detectives applied for and were granted a warrant following a weeks-long narcotics investigation.

One of those men was identified by police as Gregorio Pereira, the 59-year-old owner of the auto body shop. Pereira and the other men, none of whom work at the business, according to police, were all detained as detectives executed the warrant.

"Inside the office area of the repair shop, they found 30 .40-caliber rounds of ammunition under a counter within a tool bag," said police Detective Sgt. Michael Dennehy. "They also located 22 7.26 rounds of rifle ammunition found under the counter."

Inside a filing cabinet in the office, detectives found 0.6 grams of crack cocaine in a pill bottle, Dennehy said. They also seized a box containing 23.5 grams of an unknown powder that will require further testing to determine what the drug is, he said. They found eight Seroquel tablets on a counter, he said.

One of the men found inside the garage, 50-year-old Rui Vicente, was arrested on a warrant. The other five men were released after police say they were checked for potential drugs and weapons. Police say all the men beside the owner told detectives they do not work at the shop and were only there "smoking marijuana."

The garage is expected to face code violations and citations, including for the amount of vehicles that were on the property. The owner may have to appear before the Brockton City Council at a later date to face potential penalties.
