Animal Husbandry
Get the Buzz: An Introduction to Beekeeping An overview of the beekeeper’s year. Learn the basics: Where is the best place to set up a hive? When do you order bees? Where do you find your materials? When is the best time to harvest honey? All these questions and more will be answered by Curtis Gentry, a beekeeper with over 30 years experience. Monday, January 25, 6-9 p.m. $20 Garden members, $25 non-members
What equipment do you need for your bees? Curtis Gentry is offering a drop-in class to look at all the equipment you need to get started with your beekeeping -- what is it and how is it assembled/used? This will include the intricacies of frames and selecting/mounting foundation. There will be an ongoing demonstration at the Garden House. Baby Chicks in the City: Hatching Your Own Flock
Join Walter Reeves, The Georgia Gardener, for an educational evening on how to order, incubate, hatch, and raise your new chicken flock. He'll discuss build-your-own versus store-bought incubators and specific techniques to insure success. He will share his personal experiences with chickens and eggs, which began when he was three on his family's egg farm! Walter plans to have both preserved embryos and freshly hatched chicks on hand. Do: Learn to Be A Beekeeper
Curtis Gentry offers a hands-on, in-depth two-part course for the new beekeeper. Students will build a hive, install a package of bees, review the management of a happy hive, explore the different types of honey, and more. This will be a hands-on, informative session at the Oakhurst Garden’s own beehives. Saturday, April 10 AND 17, 2-5 p.m. $55 Garden members, $65 non-members
Classes for Your Garden
The Recycled Garden Learn how to take your compost, leaves, and garden trimmings to create beautiful, creative gardens on a small budget. Take items you have on hand or easily found (including sources) including old bricks, cement, bottles, and more for an attractive and functional garden. Join Glynis Ward for an in depth class on how your garden can benefit from the ultimate recycling! Wednesday January 13, 7-9 p.m. $15 for Garden members, $20 for non-members
Herbs from Seed and Cuttings Parsley, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme…we love them all, but what about Papalo, salad burnet and hyssop? Join Glynis Ward and learn all about growing a wide variety of easy culinary, tea, and ornamental/medicinal herbs from seed which are perfect
for the sunny garden. Please bring plenty of recyclable containers: garden pots, yogurt and margarine tubs, milk or juice jugs. We’ll supply the seed for a wide array of well known and uncommon herb seeds and the soil. Wednesday, January 27, 7-9 p.m. $20 Garden members, $25 non-members
Grafting Fruit Trees Have you ever wondered how weeping flowering cherries were produced on a straight trunk or how to make two different color flowers appear on one tree? How are those "fruit cocktail trees " made featuring different fruit on the same tree or how to clone your favorite trees without having to root them? Grafting is a technique of tree propagation and formation that has been around for more than 2 millennia. Rob Hamilton will discuss grafting's history and various uses, tools and techniques. A must-have skill for anyone who has a serious interest in trees or general plant propagation. Leave this class with the basic knowledge you need to graft your own trees. Principles of Square Foot Gardening Join Lyn and Bob Bernstein for a course that will cover the cover the basics of Square Foot Gardening as presented by Mel Bartholomew in his book, All New Square Foot Gardening. You will learn about garden planning, the SFG grid, plant spacing, and watering method. Join us April 3rd for planting a spring garden and April 24th for planting your summer garden! Planting a Square Foot Spring Garden You have read the books, maybe attended a few classes, but may not feel comfortable with the actual process of putting plants and seeds in the ground. Lyn and Bob Bernstein are ready to guide you as you sow seeds for peas, spinach, lettuce, beets, carrots as well as plant broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and other transplants into the ground.
The planting will follow the smart space method developed by Mel Bartholomew in his book All New Square Foot Gardening. Saturday, April 3, 1-3 p.m. $15 Garden members, $20 non-members

Soups and Stews on a Budget: Stay warm and healthy during the cold of winter! Combine
foods and tastes, using inexpensive meats and vegetables to create soups and stews. We will prepare the elegant yet inexpensive Beef Bourguignonne from Julia Child's book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking (featured in the movie, "Julie and Julia"). There will be at least two additional stews and soups to taste and other recipes for you to take home and make yourself. We’ll eat dinner together, so come ready to eat! In this hands-on class, we will all work together to prepare one of the easy and quick soups. Love Potions for your Valentine Combine Essential Oils into blends that
will relax and excite you and your Valentine. Bring containers to carry home bath salts and massage oils that you make (1 pint jar-bath salts and one 1/2 pint jar-massage oil). We will prepare simple dishes including as many aphrodisiac foods as we can pack into three courses. All food, well prepared, is sensual as well as nurturing. Learn to make and taste one yeast bread and make one quick bread from start to finish. Discuss how to substitute gluten-free flour in your favorite cookie recipe, quick bread, your fried chicken, & thicken your gravy or sauces. This class is taught by Charli Vogt, RN, MN, MPH. Art in the Garden
Learn to make your own Royal Court! These wonderful Stand Dolls are really easy to assemble once you have all the parts in place. At 6 inches tall, these dolls are great on nature table displays, in doll houses or in castle play. Rhonda Wildman will provide you with all the supplies to make your choice of a regal king, queen, prince or princess will be provided for you in this class. Make a Nuno Felted Scarf – A Year Round Scarf
Eiko Taylor will show you how to take chiffon cloth, sheep fleece, and yarn and create a one of a kind, lightweight scarf. Using soap and water and a physical molding, the students will adhere the sheeps wool to the chiffon. Sheep wool comes in so many just in time for winter. Class is for both beginner and advanced. Handmade Valentines using Recycled Papermaking Techniques
Join Katy DeMent, a self-taught papermaker for this two-hour romantically themed workshop. Participants will learn about traditional papermaking while exploring more modern paper making techniques all with a Valentine theme. Learn about surface design, texture, and composition while creating sheets of recycled paper featuring, glitters,
ribbons, flower petals and vintage ephemera. We will form sheets of paper with a variety of recycled and plant fibers as well as the creation of “wet on wet collages” that can include mementos from home (family mementos, photos, plants, etc). These papers, when dry, will render lovely gifts to share with your loved ones. This event will include hot chocolate to warm your heart and your soul. Saturday, February 6, 10-noon for children, minimum age 4 $20 for members, $25 for non members (fee covers 1 adult with 1 child, each additional child is $5)(fee includes all materials)
