Water can move up from a shallow water table in response to gradients created by root water extraction (Van Bavel et al., 1968; Nimah and Hanks, 1973; Allmaras et al., 1975; and Van Bavel and Ahmed, 1976; Maroux and Lafolie, 1998). Also extensive rooting at the capillary fringe may take up the most water (Reicosky et al., 1972). Recent techniques have been developed to quantify the lateral water movement and upward water movement (Nachabe, 2002; Morgan and Stolt, 2004; Nachabe et al., 2004, 2005), but these techniques require automated soil water content measurements.
