In a post today, GAE states that the switchover to the new pricing will take place November 1 2011, and that Python 2.7 will be available December 1.  This last item means potentially improved throughput, so I will see if I can make use of that, and other changes in GAE since the launch of the AWSQS service.

Meanwhile, it appears that AWSQS will be able to handle current load levels and remain within the free quota limits.  It looks like there is a chance that the last 30-45 minutes of each day (PST) may exceed the limits, however, in which case AWSQS will return only HTTP 500 errors until the daily quotas are reset at 00:00:00 PST.  The cause of this seems to primarily be related to GAE operational idiosyncrasies, where resource pressures cause increases in GAE latency.  It's a classic case of heavier demand instaneously increasing prices.

I will continue to monitor the situation and post updates here.  For more details, please visit the Google App Engine group.
