Good Morning All-
As the subject line says, this is the opportunity we’ve been waiting for and we need to act now. We need as many Senators as possible to send the United for
Homes Proposal to Senate Finance Chair Max Baucus (D-MT) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT). This is
our chance to influence the Senate tax reform bill, and we can’t let it pass us by. Senate Finance Leaders will be accepting recommendations for tax reform through July 26. This is a very short time frame.
This week, please ask your Senator to submit the
United for Homes proposal (not the HR 1213 legislation) to the Senate Finance Committee, and use the following weeks for aggressive follow up. Get your members involved! Organize a call in day and/or sign on letters from your field (you could start with
endorsers from your state). This is a one-shot opportunity. Senate leaders are highly unlikely to consider our proposal if they don’t hear about it from their colleagues.
We’re here to help! Please let me know if you need anything from us as you make contact with your Senate offices.
Thanks,
La’Teashia

Senators Need to Submit Support for United for Homes Proposal to Senate Finance Committee By July 26
The Senate Finance Committee is accepting recommendations from Senators for tax expenditures to include in the Senate tax reform bill that meet these three threshold requirements:
1. Help grow the economy.
2. Make the tax code fairer.
3. Effectively promote other important policy objectives.
What can meet these standards better than the United for Homes campaign proposal?
It is critical that you ask your Senators to submit the
United for Homes proposal to the Senate Finance Committee. There will be no better opportunity to influence the Senate tax reform bill than now!
The Senate Finance Chair Max Baucus (D-MT) and Ranking Member Orrin Hatch (R-UT) need
submissions from their fellow Senators by July 26; bi-partisan submissions are best.
You know that
housing needs in your state are not being met by existing resources. As an endorser, you also know that the United for Homes proposal will bring housing resources for extremely low income housing to
your state.
All the
background you need on the United for Homes campaign is ready for you. Now is the time to ACT:
-
Call the tax staff person in each of your Senators’ offices. Tell them that you want the Senator to submit the United for Homes proposal to the Senate Finance Committee by
the deadline of July 26. You can reach all Senate offices through the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and find direct numbers at
www.senate.gov.
-
Tell your Senators how
modifications to the mortgage interest deduction as in the United for Homes proposal will make the tax code fairer, better targeted, and more efficient.
-
Tell your Senate offices that both extremely poor renters and low and moderate income homeowners will benefit from modifications to the mortgage interest deduction.
-
If you are a homeowner with a mortgage, our
tax calculator can help you explain to your Senate offices how you personally will be impacted.
-
Report how directing funds to the
National Housing Trust Fund will help your state.
-
Engage your network and send sign-on letters to your Senators; organize a call-in day urging them to submit the United for Homes proposal to the Senate Finance Committee.
-
Recruit additional allies to
endorse the United for Homes campaign! There are more than
1,000 local, state, and national organizations plus state and local elected officials and governments who have already endorsed the United for Homes campaign, and we need more!
-
Report to us on how your outreach is going and to ask for help.
Thank you for your support!
