For a while I have been advocating that the sidewalk approaches to the
Jubilee underpass require widening because of the large number of ped/
bicycle and bicycle/bicycle conflicts that occur there every day.

I've recently noticed that the sidewalk south of the underpass
( http://www.handofgord.com/cycling/JubileeUnderpassSidewalk2.jpg )
has suffered major damage due to the recent reconstruction of the
overpass. While I believe the original tender for the overpass work
did NOT include restoration of this section of sidewalk, I think it is
highly likely that it will now need to be totally reconstructed.

Is there any way we could get this rebuilt to at least 8 feet instead
of the existing 5 feet? I'm really tired of dodging peds down there.
(This is one of the very few places I ride on the sidewalk.)

Hi Gord,

This sidewalk on the east side of Pembina will be removed when the
Pembina Underpass is built to make way for an additional northbound
traffic lane. At that time the sidewalk under the Jubilee overpass
will be placed on the opposite side
of the piers, and a (3m?) tunnel will be built through the embankment
beneath the rail line to connect to Pembina North. Tat work takes
place in 2013 and 2014, with design scheduled for 2011.

We have been lobbying hard to have a similar tunnel and path put on
the
west side of Pembina at this time as well, which would connect to the
Harrow bike lanes and phase II of rapid transit. The late councillor
Bill Clement actually stopped one of my presentations just to remind
me that the city always includes At in major rehabs, so I had nothing
to worry about.

As I predicted, this entire length of sidewalk is now under
reconstruction. Will it be built to a width that will appropriately
accommodate the heavy pedestrian and bicycle traffic? We shall see.
(But I'm not holding my breath.)

Hey Gord,

I've been through a couple of times, and I'm not really sure what's
been done. It looks like the section of sidewalk under the overpass
has been widened, but the section leading up to this from Jubilee has
not.

Like I said, I was under the impression that they would eventually be
moving the sidewalk to the opposite side of the pillars, so I don't
know what the plans are.
