This group is for people in Southwest Virginia who either own or are
interested in either RepRap or MakerBot.

This thread is for introductions. Do you currently have a RepRap or
MakerBot? Are you building one? Considering building one? Just
curious?

My introduction:

I'm the proud builder of MakerBot #238 and am currently printing parts
for a RepRap Mendel. I live in Christiansburg and work in Roanoke as
a Senior Research Engineer for Luna Innovations. I started this group
to connect with others in the area with similar interests.

Other hardware: I also have a Sherline CNC milling machine and a
Sherline manual lathe. My living room looks more like a workshop than
a living area.

Todd,

I teach in the Theatre department at Washington & Lee University in
Lexington. I am the proud owner of Makerbot #17. I hope to build a CNC
someday...

Best,
O.

Nice to meet you! Do you use it to make theatre props? Which kind of
CNC are you thinking of building?

I'm going to use it for model set pieces and small props. AlsO I am
working on pieces for puppets.

I think the kit/website we were looking at was:
http://buildyourcnc.com/default.aspx

What are your thoughts on CNCs?

O.

Neat!

I like my Sherline CNC mill for milling small pieces out of metal and other materials.  If I needed to cut larger pieces out of wood and plastics, I'd definitely consider a CNC gantry router like the type and size you linked to.  My Dad and brother recently built http://www.joescnc.com/themachines-hybrid.php .  It came out really nice and cuts much faster than my Sherline.  They put 1 TPI leadscrews on it instead of the leadscrews the plans call for, which gives it amazing speed.  For me its biggest downside is its size; it would eat up a large chunk of my garage.

Will be receiving my Makerbot from batch #9 around December 11. I
live in Winston-Salem NC, about 3 hours away. If you need anything
let me know!

Justin Stiltner here, ME student at Virginia Tech and owner of
makerbot 451. Currently living in Blacksburg. I also do machine work
and have an X2 mini mill, but cannot reasonably operate it from my
apartment.
