HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. - The North Wake Landfill is full, and will be
closing next summer, forcing the trash elswhere in 2008.

The new South Wake Landfill is designed to provide an environmentally
safe way to get rid of solid waste in the county for the next 25
years.

South Wake Landfill Citizens Committee Chairman, Ed Dressen said he
had concerns about the landfill and the impact it would have on
traffic and litter in the area, but landfill officials provided
answers.

"It's only about 50 more (trucks) than we have there now so you don't
have the volume of traffic that people think it will bring," said
Dressen. He also said the county will pick up trash along Highway 55
everyday, a half mile in each direction.

Another concern and perhaps his biggest was the smell from the
landfill. He said the smell actually comes from the methane gas
produced by the waste which won't happen for 5 years, but said the
county already has a plan to deal with the smell.

"They take that methane gas and use it as a resource to sell it off to
plants," he said.

Officials aren't the only ones easing Dressen's concerns. He's had the
opportunity to talk with people like North Wake Landfill Committee
Chairmen Beau Mills about having a landfill close to home.

Mills lives in a neighborhood adjacent to the North Wake Landfill and
he said the only problem was the occasional smell.

"Once every few months there would be sort of a smell wafting over
usually the county would change some of the operations and that smell
would go away" said Mills.

County officials want residents to be involved. If trucks are spotted
dropping trash or there is an increase in litter in the area or any
other concerns residents should contact them immediately and they will
fix the problem.

The South Wake Landfill is located in Holly Springs just off of
Highway 55 at the intersection of Old Smithfield Rd. It's scheduled to
open in February.
