Hello Weekly!
Preparation season for our annual Best of the South Side issue—our biggest and most fun issue every year—is upon us. (Check out last year's here.) At this time, we are looking for contributors who are interested in taking a Neighborhood Captain role for the issue.
These roles entail overseeing what goes into the section for that neighborhood in the issue—you decide what the "bests" are. You would write as many of them as you are interested in writing, and work with other Weekly contributors who would write the rest. You would also contribute to conversations about how the neighborhood is represented visually.
Contributors who are from or live in the neighborhoods that they are interested in being the captain for will be given preference, but this issue is also a great way for contributors to spend a lot of time in and learn about a neighborhood they are not as familiar with as well. For captains who are not from the neighborhoods they are captaining, we may ask you to work with a new contributor as co-captains, if that is something you'd feel comfortable with.
The timeline for the issue is as follows: It publishes in mid-September, so from right now until the end of April we are going to be focusing on assigning captains and working with them on their lists of "bests." From May until August will be working on the actual content of the issue, and the end of August into early September will be focused on final edits.
Please contact me if you'd like to pick up a neighborhood captain assignment, or if you have any questions. The only neighborhoods currently assigned are Little Village, the South Loop, and potentially West Lawn and Pilsen. Everything other neighborhood south of Roosevelt is open. Here is a spreadsheet with all, or nearly all, of the neighborhoods; some can be consolidated into pairs or groups, and if your home neighborhood is not here but you'd like us to include it in BoSS, let me know!
If you don't want to be a Captain, but are interested in pitching a "best" or two—regardless of whether or not you want to write it yourself—please be in touch with me and I'll make sure to connect you with the Captain when they are assigned. Additionally, if you want to pick up "best" pitches, stay tuned—we'll be sending out pitch emails specifically for BoSS soon enough.
Finally, we are going to be having a party for BoSS close to publication. Keep your eyes peeled for more info about that!
Thanks!
Sam
