Hi,

This list is pretty much not active.  I guess most people where busy.  Dennis started a google group which maybe on similar goals.  I think its mainly the name, not sure he may correct me here.  We have adopted the tribe convention, as per www.scala-tribes.org which like the 3rd hit after "scala user group" on google.  1st and 2nd is the scala-user and scala-lang.org

There is currently 23 people on the list.  Maybe it would be good if anybody cares or objects on the "southern" naming.  Scala is pretty small and smaller still in NZ.  It would be great if we only had one.  We can close the group if NZ-scala makes more sense, or just continue on.  I have also started a Southern Scala Tribe community on g+ which was brought up by Mark.  We tried to use g+ before, but just a page, it didn't seem to work.  Don't recall if g+ communities was available last Aug.

What would be a good way forward?

a. close this list and migrate to nz-scala
b. move to g+ community (I was thinking to move there, just to give it a try)  I am more keen on having hangout, which as the first meeting.  We ended up adding ourselves in circles and did the hangout.  So maybe g+ community will keep our personal and community circles apart.
c. continue status quo.

I would like for "b", as this was our first hope initially, but g+ page didn't work.  We are a small group so its likely doing hangout and some people physically together will be the norm on our meeting.

Thanks.

Hi Jun,

Just to clarify why I created the nz-scala mailing list - I was hoping to get some technical discussions going around Scala usage, and this list was both inactive (there've been more emails exchanged in the last few days *about* the lists than were on this list in the first place... and no technical content at all) and, I thought, poorly named. So I created a new list that followed the same convention as nz-java and similar lists.

But I don't have any attachment to a new list, and I'm not trying to dethrone you (subtle GoT reference there :-)  ) as list owner. Given that most people seem to prefer a G+ community to a mailing list, I'm fine with doing that. But could you make the name "NZ Scala" or something similar? It seems to me that would be more in keeping with other usages, such as the large groups in Sydney (http://www.meetup.com/scalasyd/) and Melbourne (https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/scala-melb), and since we're making a change anyway now is the time to get it right(er).

Regards,

  - Dennis

I guess I can't really expect a lot of tech questions here, or none that is local to NZ.  Even the g+ scala community is not as active.  The main scala-users list is pretty small and I guess that is where most tech discussions are.  Nobody has complained about the name and maybe would good if that was pointed.  Doing a google for "nz scala users" brings up the original post I put in various users list.  Its sad though scala-tribes site was not being update anymore.

I have renamed the G+ community to "NZ Scala".  I don't think there is any throne or anything.  Same as you, and likely most people here.  We are after scala having some presence in nz.

Here is the community for reference.

Some people have joined already.  I better put the link on this mailing list group.
