to Streetcar System Plan SE Working Group
SE Woodstock runs east and west through Southeast Portland. It is one
of the older city centers, platted in 1889. Woodstock was formerly
served by streetcars which ran south on SE 39th, north on SE 41st add
east to SE 72nd and beyond.
Woodstock between SE 39th and 50th is primarily commercial, with some
residential at 39th and 40th, then residential with mixed commercial
out to 57th. The section between 57th and 82nd is primarily
residential, with scattered businesses or retail found at 67th and
72nd, then again between 80th and 82nd.
The core shopping centers are between 43rd and 48th, where Safeway, Bi-
mart and most of the other local retail businesses are located.
There is a branch of the Multnomah county library located at 49th
avenue.
The churches along this route are All Saints Episcopal at 41st, the
Chinese Presbyterian at 48th, Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic church at
52nd, along with its school facility, which is rented by a private
school. Tremont Evangelical is at 72nd, and Calvary Lutheran at 80th.
Bike lanes (continuing to the west) are to be found between 39th and
41st, then again between 52nd and 82nd, where they continue east. A
north/south bikeway intersects at SE 41st as well.
The section between 41st and 52nd consists of one travel lane in each
direction with a center left turn lane; there are multiple pedestrian
islands with painted crosswalks. There are also plantings of street
trees, shrubs and flowers located on these islands
The commercial businesses are mostly on the one level. Most
residential areas are bungalows, one or two story high with a yard
around it. There are a few condominiums and infill projects, with two
floors. There are a few apartment complexes on 72nd, four or five
blocks away from Woodstock, but Woodstock proper has no multistory
apartment complexes. There is a school on 48th, a branch of Portland
Public School for students who do not fit in a regular school setting
(no sign shows that it is a school). These students are of high
school age. Reed College is on 32nd, west of the area studied.
