Col. Blanton will be honored with a Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 AM Tuesday morning, October 22, 2013, in the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church. Final Farewell and Commendation will follow at 2:00 PM in the Beaufort National Cemetery, with full military honors, directed by DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER.
The family will receive friends in the church hall from 9:30 AM until the hour of service Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to a charity of one's choice in honor of Col. Blanton.
Col. Blanton was born September 2, 1922, in Chadron, NE, a son of William H. Blanton and Myrtle Seidell Blanton, the sixth of seven children. He spent much of his childhood in Rapid City, SD. Col. Blanton joined the Army, and then the Army Air Corps, and went onto become a pilot in the US Air Force, where he served for twenty-five years and flew in the Berlin Airlift during WWII. He also served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. After a distinguished career in the US Air Force, he joined the American Red Cross and served as a field director in military bases all over the globe.
After nineteen years with the Red Cross, Col. Blanton retired with his wife, Mildred, in Hemet, CA, where they lived for fourteen years before moving to South Carolina. He was an active member of the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church, and was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mildred "Mickey" Broun Blanton, a son, Glen Blanton, and a grandson, Trey Blanton.
Surviving are a son, Guy I. Blanton, Jr., and his wife, Gail, of Bonneau; a sister, Lois Hylton of Napa, CA; seven grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and many great-great grandchildren. Col. Blanton will be deeply missed by all.
