I'd be willing to help coordinate a fundraiser using Kickstarter to
help raise awareness and funds.

We need to firm up the mission, materials and money that we need.

Awesome, thanks!

I've sent an email to the landlord asking how much he wants for the
space, and the minimum lease terms. I'll post as soon as I know.

As for mission, here's a stab:

"The mission of the South Bay Toolshop is to provide:

* a safe, inexpensive place to lend and borrow tools
* a safe, inexpensive, well-stocked community workshop
* education and training for carpentry, metalworking, sewing and other
handicrafts to both its members and the public"

Editing and suggestions are welcome.

As for materials, perhaps flyers to put up around town? Mailing lists
to get the word out?

I'll hit up my homies at nycr to see if we can get some cross blog adverts for the kickstarter once it's up.

Oh and hi.  I'm matt.

please excuse brevity, sent from cell.

Okay, it looks like space would cost the following:

$3,300/month ($1.15/ft2)
3 year lease

Let's assume that other costs (gas/electricity/trash/water/insurance)
raise the monthly cost to $4000.00/month (I'll ask the current tenant
how much he pays). Move-in costs would probably be somewhere in the
range of $12,000.00 (first+two months).

Assuming that we charge $50.00/month to be a member of the toolshop,
that would mean that we'd need about 80 people to sign up to break even,
probably a 100 to be safe.

So the questions become:

* Are there 80-100 people who would pay $50.00/month to be a member?
* Can we get corporate sponsorship?
* Do we know anyone who would be willing to sign a 3 year lease?
* Is this something the HackerDojo community would like to do under
their aegis?
