The South Asian Literature Association will honor Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni with its Achievement Award
at the annual meeting on December 26-27, 2007, in Chicago, IL. Divakaruni will accept her award on December 27.
Papers are solicited for a panel honoring the work of Divakaruni. Papers may address any of her writings,
but priority will be given to those proposals that investigate the themes of social justice, as the 2007
SALA Conference title is “Social Justice in South Asian Cultural Practices.”
Papers may address the following issues, amongst others:
* Struggles against both colonialism and indigenous forms of injustices
* Gender justice
* Representing ethnicity and sexuality
* Social justice in post-9/11 America
Papers on other South Asian women writers, such as Meena Alexander, Bharati Mukherjee and Anita Desai,
will be considered for this panel as well.
Abstracts of 200-300 words with the subject line, SALA Divakaruni Abstract, must be sent to both conference
co-chairs by September 15, 2007 at the very latest. We encourage abstracts to be sent as soon as possible.
