I am only a friend of the Hackspace as I live near Winchester and cannot justify the cost of membership and petrol on my pension. I am hoping to make some pottery plant labels and Ideally would like to create some templates. I was wondering if I produced an appropriate svg file if somebody would LaserCut me some for a small fee. Also where would be a good place to buy some laser ply for the templates?

Thanks
Keith Sloan

I'd cut them for you for just the laser time money in the laser pot, I'm sure others would too.

Let's get the SVG files ready first, got a design and material in mind?

PS. Plywood, I should learn to read. You want beach ply really. The higher the quality the fewer cavities and the better it will laser. Totton Timber has been recommended, theres also a lot of online resources.

Hi Bracken

Many thanks I am in the process of creating an appropriate SVG file together.

What size can it be A3?

Thanks Keith

The bed is slightly bigger than A3, full dimensions are here: https://wiki.somakeit.org.uk/wiki/Laser_Cutter

You can laser any document size smaller than the bed.

I can plan to go to Totton Timber to try and get the plywood anytime from Monday onwards.
I assume the plan would be to meet at the Hackspace sometime.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay, I'll be in on Sunday the 13th from 2pm. Otherwise I can probably make a weekday evening sooner or later than that, what's good for you?

Had a look at the SVG, with a minor tweak I can make in 2 seconds it's good to go.

Thanks for agreeing to come Sunday

I will try and pick up some ply this afternoon or Friday.

Yes coming from Winchester. Do you need a lift?

What time Sunday?

I don't specifically need a lift, but I am coming from Colden Common.

Hi Bracken

Have Birch Ply in A3 sheets.

I could always pick you up from Colden Common on the way. Would need an address

2pm is fine. I also have a couple of things to 3D print just over 30 mins each and happy to stay even later
if that helps for a lift there and back.

That would be great, I'm at 41 Main Road, Colden Common SO21 1RP.

Its also worth getting some masking tape to go underneath the ply to stop the flare up from the bed from staining the bottom of your parts.

Bracken

Okay see you about 1:30?

Do you mean cover the whole sheet with masking tape?
Would sheets of paper taped to ply with masking tape work? Or is that likely to catch fire?

Not that worried about staining as they are templates for cutting out from a clay sheet.
The reason I am keen to get done before Wednesday is that I would then have a chance of getting
the final kitchen labels glazed & fired before Christmas, so thanks again for agreeing to do it this Sunday

Thanks Keith

It would need to be tape stuck down well. But as you don't mind the smoke staining we will skip it.

See you Sunday.
