Renting Tips

Last week, we discussed things to look for in purchasing an instrument.  Not ready to buy yet?  No problem!  Today, we'll be talking about renting an instrument.

The advantages to renting are in the ease and convenience, so make sure it really is easy and convenient.  How do you have to pay for the rental?  Do you have to go in to the store to make a payment, or do they have other options available?  Will you have to be the one remembering, or will they send you a bill?

What is the cost of the instrument including their repair/replace policy?  Does it come with it?  Do you have to pay extra?  This is the policy that lets you get a string replaced for free.  Make sure you know what the store's policy actually covers, because not all stores cover the same things.

Where is the store located?  Will it be a huge hassle to bring an instrument in for either repairs or to upgrade to a larger size?  Do they have hours that work for you?

Most importantly, does the store have a rent-to-own program?  How much of the rent that you pay will go towards purchasing an instrument?  What kind of instruments do they have available for purchase?  Will you be able to choose any of them, or do you have to choose the instrument you were last renting?

Do they have new or used instruments?  Oftentimes, new instruments look prettier, but used sound nicer.  Which is more important to you?

Finally, it's important to remember that not all rental programs are equal, and base your decision on where to go more than just on price.  Haven't decided whether you want to rent or buy?  Check out my "To Rent or To Buy" Blog for more information!  Don't know where to check?  I have a document on my website - look for "Instrument Rental Quotes".
