Gillette says that the minimum order of chicks now is 12. I am
interested in buying some chicks, but don't want 12 of them at this
point. Is there anybody who would be interested in splitting an order
with me? We can order more than a dozen, just not less.

They have a price list available, and the Ameraucana are 3.99 each, RI
reds are 2.99 each, and they have 3 other breeds. It's not McMurray,
but it's local and easy.

If somebody is interested in ordering from McMurray and wants to put
together a group order, that could be fun too!

How many do you want? The reality is that you can expect to loose a few chickens in the first year. And some of them will turn out to be roosters which you are unlikely to want more than one of. (Chris and I started with 12 and after one year are down to 7. And 2 are roosters: Each with their own micro-flock.)

Chris bought 25 chickens from McMurray (2/3 bantams). I will get the list of breeds from her. We are not keeping them all and so we will have some to sell. Unfortunately, it will be several weeks before we know what we are keeping.

I am guessing that Kira may have chicks to see also. Kira?

I hope to end up with 5 or 6 hens, and thought 8 birds would do that.  Twelve seems like a lot of personalities!

Will you post when you know what you will be selling?

Oh Yikes! Hope you haven’t bought your chicks yet?!?!?

I haven’t had time to post this to the discussion list yet…

Check in with Huckleberry Grove Farm  - where I’ve gotten all of my recent chicks! You can buy as few or as many as you want… all sorts of bantam and full sized varieties, and some sex links I think! $4 - $6 each and they’ll take back roos if you need them to.

Jen, the gal who runs the place is FABULOUS and it is a dream of a little farm to see J

Give her an email at hucklebe...@yahoo.com

And, as Andrew mentioned, I will have some bantams ready to go soon (will be about 6 weeks old) pretty sure it will be a trio of Mille Fleur bantams, and either 2 roos of blue laced red Wyandotte (or a pair?) bantams.

Also have 2 brooders that I’ll be done with if anyone needs/wants to borrow!

Out now to finish building my 2nd coop!

Best to all, Kira.

Kira,
I've never heard of that farm - is it in RI? If it's not too far I would love to visit, since you say it's great... don't really NEED any chickens right now (Ha ha) but I love to see different farms/home set-ups.

I have 25 Auracauna chicks from MacMurray, vaccinated, and all hens. They are almost fully feathered, 4 weeks old. I could spare a few if someone wants just a couple of birds. They all appear very healthy and are raring to go. I live in Kingston.

Hahaha! Life has gone to the chickens here in Narragansett Pier! Spent the weekend retrofitting an old rabbit hutch, and building from scratch a second coop & run to accommodate our chicks when they are ready to go outside, but not big enough to go in with the established flock and start dealing with the "pecking order".

Few comments & answers here...

The sad truth is that unless you are buying sexed birds, or sex links, you can fully expect that they'll come out 50/50 girls/boys from eggs or chicks. Leaves a surplus of roos :-(

Huckleberry Grove Farm is in Foster, RI (huckleb...@yahoo.com) on East Killingly Road off Rt. 6. It is a bit of a hike from South County but makes for a nice adventure through some pretty country (Rt. 102).

Jen who runs most of the sales operation posts frequently on Craig's list in the farm & garden category. Here is the link for her posting from last week (http://providence.craigslist.org/grd/1661944854.html) for new hatchlings ready for pick up last Saturday... she sets up an appointment time and usually dedicates about 30 minutes per person/family. First time we were there for about 2 hours - Bryn fell in love with the newbie pygmy goats that tried to nurse from her fingers. I've told her about the Coop tour we had and that she might get some mail from down our way... Am sure she'd be happy for visitors even if you aren't in buying mode.

As i mentioned in an earlier email, i'll have a few bantams to pass along in the next month or so.

Happy with all this chicken-ness!
Kira.
