NOTE:  The proposed budgets mentioned below were rejected by CITY STAFF, not the City Council. When posting about this, be sure to not say the City Council is doing it; the City Councilors are the ones who can help, not the ones to be blamed.

From The Majestic Ambassadors

The Majestic Theatre needs our help!

After years of operating with only one full time worker (Jimbo), this year Majestic staff finally got encouragement from Parks and Recreation leadership to submit a budget that added two full time tech workers. These positions would be able to fully support productions with only a tiny impact to the City budget. The proposed budget was rejected. The Majestic staff then put forth a modified proposal with NO impact to the City budget. It was also rejected. When the staff asked why the latest proposal was rejected if it had no budget impact, they were told that it didn’t matter, the City wouldn’t allow additional full time workers at the Majestic.

Being forced to have no full time workers supporting productions has led to a situation in which Majestic part time staff are consistently overworked, have little to no days off, and thus burn out and quit, moving on to better jobs. Two full time workers would allow the Majestic to both provide the huge support that the shows need AND allow the part time crew to have realistic work/life balance. The alternative is “right-sizing” the Majestic. This is another way to say making cuts to the number of shows the Majestic does per year.

We can’t let this happen. If the City Council hears from all of us how critical the Majestic is for our health and happiness, and how much we love and depend on it, they will be able to act. They can ask the City to work with Majestic staff to get full time production workers in place so that no shows need to be cut and the workers have a realistic work/life balance.

So, how can you help? We need your help to tell the City Council how much the Majestic means to our community and that it’s critical for it to be adequately supported. You can start by filling out this Google form. It will tell the organizers of the Majestic Ambassadors how you want to help. You can write an email, make a call, sign up to testify at a public meeting, sign up to go to a public meeting in support, or add your name to an open letter we are preparing to send to the City Council. The Ambassadors will help you with your email or your phone call or testimony; you don’t have to be scared of not knowing exactly what to say. And we need all kinds of people! Young people, older folks, people from historically marginalized communities, to show the City Council that the Majestic is not just for a “niche” group, but one of the hearts of our community.

We need to do this quickly as the budget process for the City ends in June! Fill out the form today! Share this message with your friends and family that love the Majestic! The more people who speak up, the more power we have to make things right for the place we love.

We can do this together. We Are Majestic.

Best not to blame anyone. We can be respectful to one another! Seek to understand first.
