Did you know that Sawala (William Hartless), the revered Ampinefu Kalapuya who dictated all of the information we have on the people who lived here for a long, long time was born in South Corvallis, purportedly in a Tarweed patch?

Tarweed Awakening Corvallis

The Plant, The Person, The Place

Saturday, August 23rd from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

You are invited to the Tarweed Awakening Corvallis. Champinefu means the Place of the people of Pinefu (Marys River).

  • Sawala (AKA William Hartless), the person, named after asawal (Tarweed) and left us the information we currently know of the local Ampinefu Kalapuya people.
  • Sawala (AKA Shawala) Point (named after the person who was named for the Tarweed plant) at the confluence of the Pinefu (Marys) River and the Willamette River.
