In the interest of everyone, if you have faulty firmware, if you use this reset, the PUK is reset to "12345678" which is confirmed. But the PIN has to be independently requested from the Service Provider. Setting a new PIN somehow does not have write access on many operator SIM cards, possibly due to hardware security limitations.
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/8368-37-help-blocked -- There's a user comment on this page mentioning clearly that the SIM was unblocked using the technique.
Hard Reset the Phone using the triple key salute at power-on. On models like the 5130 where power is still a soft key, you might have to pull a stunt like pulling the battery out and putting it in.
This
does not reset the PIN. This only sets the PUK (Phone Unlock Code) following standard PUK2 to 12345678. This is to unlock a phone that gets locked.
However, if things go really wrong the phone allows you to the next screen after entering PUK2 (as 12345678) - in some older versions this is (00000000) and in certain countries 01234567 - but the first option works in most.
Then you are prompted for a new PIN. At this point, you can enter a new PIN. You are asked to verify the new PIN. Just re-enter the same PIN. If your SIM is not operator locked, your PIN is unlocked [This is never the case.] The new PIN will not seem to work. If you try this more than thrice, the SIM gets locked and that's that, your SIM is no longer usable.
I did this on Siva's phone - and learned a tough lesson. I am very sorry for locking his SIM - I have already offered to read the contact data from the phone and give it to him to load on a new SIM, but that's all I can do here.
If you forget your PIN, please ask your operator to unlock, these keystrokes
do not provide a solution. They only help you reset the "Phone Unlock Code" (PUK) which is different from the PIN unlock code.
Normally the PIN is set to a specific SIM card with a particular service provider. If you are going to switch the SIM card to a newer phone, please remove the PIN and then switch. Otherwise, both the phone an the SIM could easily malfunction whenever you enable PIN security.
Hope this helps people avoid the same issue in the future.
