As flowers and trees come into full bloom, May graces us with the most pleasant weather. Now that gardens have been getting freshened up in preparation for the prime growing season, find out what activities Bronx Green-Up and NYC Compost Project in the Bronx have in store for this month!
Sweeten up your spring at New Roots Community Farm at a Honey Infusion Workshop on May 13th, or get familiar with the more-than-human residents of Bissel Community Garden at their Volunteer Day and BioBlitz on May 6th.

Welcome to the Team, Frances!
Frances is an urban farmer and environmental educator. Their prior experience includes coordinating community organizations for volunteer projects for Partnership for Parks in Queens and most recently as Program Coordinator as Bethel AME Ardmore Victory Gardens in Pennsylvania.
Bronx Food & Farm Tour Satuday, May 13 • 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Meet at River Garden at 10 a.m. • East 180th Street and Devoe AvenueCelebrate the sites along the beautiful Bronx River during Bronx Week 2023! This tour will visit the longstanding and productive River Garden, one of the oldest community gardens in the Bronx. Next, we’ll walk to Starlight Park where you’ll enjoy a healthy food tasting and learn more about the Bronx River, where dolphins were spotted earlier this year! We’ll end the tour at the nearby Concrete Plant Park, a former concrete plant that now hosts the Bronx River Foodway—one of NYC’s only edible food forests—growing food and medicinal plants.

Composting Systems and Tools

Online Class • New York Botanical GardenIntroduction to different methods and scales of composting-- from industrial, to community, to in-home. Field Trip to Padre Plaza and Brook Park Community Garden
Wednesday, May 24 • 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Meet at Padre Plaza • 541 East 149th StreetJoin us for a field trip at two Food Scrap Drop-Off sites in the Bronx! Once vacant lots, these sites have become pillars in the South Bronx community. We'll learn the history of each site and how they process food scraps into compost in order to grow food for their community. Meet us at Padre Plaza Community Garden first and then we'll take a 5-minute walk to Brook Park Community Garden.
Composting 101
Friday, May 26 • 3–5:30 p.m.
Watson Education Building • New York Botanical GardenLearn how to compost by managing the 5 Factors of Composting and find out about the key steps you need to take to ensure a healthy composting system. To register, click here.
Direct Sow & Transplant Workshop Saturday, May 20 • 11–1 p.m.
Friends of Brook Park Community Garden • Corner of Brook Park Avenue and East 141 StreetWant to grow more food in less space? Tired of struggling or having stunted transplants? This workshop will focus on the preparation, seeding, transplanting, and care of plants to maximize production. Members of registered GreenThumb community gardens will be eligible to receive seeds and plant starts to plant in their community gardens, while supplies last.
