I'm having trouble embedding metadata into some files downladed from Blastwavefx.com.  A few of the files work OK, but many cause SM to just disappear.

I checked permissions and file locking - both fine.

SM 4.1.8.79
OSX 10.5.5 on Dual G5

Happy to send file(s) if that helps.

Hi Jeremiah,
Can you let me know which files you're having trouble with (just give
me the file name, as I already have the files) and what version of SM
you're using.
ill check it out for you (on the SM version I have)

-what do you mean SM 'disappears'?

Hmm, doesn't look like my reply made it. I'll try again.

Let me know which files you're having problems with (file name will
do). I'll check it out for you with my version of SM. Btw what do you
mean by SM 'disappears'?

Thanks for your reply, Laura. Welcome to the forum. I have to moderate
new users because we were getting flooded with spam and it was a pain
to get rid of it.

Here's a zip archive containing files which fail, files which don't, and crash logs:
http://jmclients.dreamhosters.com/tech/2009-09_blastwave_embed_fail.zip

SM 4.1.8.79
OSX 10.5.5 on Dual G5

When I say SM disappears, I mean the App quits unexpectedly.  The interface disappears, and OSX displays the dialog "Soundminer v4Pro quit unexpectedly" ignore/report/relaunch.

Thanks Jeremiah, and hi Laura...

I see it crashing as its trying to twizzle the broadcast wave info for
writing. Can you check build 100 and see if it works?

You might also want to toggle on the bwdescription, bwdate, bwxxx
fields for those files and look for any anomaly.

I think the problem came when ingesting "garbage" and then trying to
encode it back.

Just checked and BWDate is the issue : 2008Ã*¡»

Looking at the raw file in this case BaritoneFast_S08CT.30.wav I can
see a bunch of non-ascii characters.

Anyways, again, see if build 100 doesn't crash!

Build 100 worked fine and did not crash on embed.

Still, I went in and fixed the date field, using just the year.  (LOTS of the files had weird characters in BWDate) and re-embedded with the fixed BWDate.

Hmm... an error handler warning us when there are illegal characters in the fields?  Don't you need to verify the fields anyway Justin?  A selling point of SM is the ability to wrangle your files into Legal BWFs.

Apologies about the corrupt date field. We became aware of it some
time ago and fixed the issue for most of our libraries. Was this a
download pack or part of the 'free downloads'? Those (free downloads)
have not yet been updated.

It's also why we're offering updates for life. if we discover metadata
kinks we'll make updates and pass them on.

Meanwhile, we'll try to upload a new download pack with cleaned up
files, maybe that'll help.

Hi Laura -

Yes, this was a free download pack --

Maybe I should keep the crash as an incentive to purchase the
blastwave packs!

Sort of a "timed" demo if you will :)

Jeremiah,

I think you embedded successfully, but just in case here are the three
files with updated metadata and no corrupt date file. (they already
include SM metadata as all our sounds do, but if you feel like adding
to what a chain drop or car crash sounds like then embed away...)

thanks for sending these -

I  did manage to do the embed just fine -

fwiw, I tag all incoming files with my own additional source and license information.

thanks to blastwave for the good work, and for the follow-through.
