I'm spotting 5.1 SFX, but I only want the L and R, spotted to LR of a stereo track.  (I keep getting .Rs and .C on my stereo tracks.  Wonder why those two?)

Is there a way of targetting directly, or do I have to spot to multiple mono tracks and drag-in what I want?

The "Channel Order" field is blank on these.

(ps I wish PT would see the L and R as a "stereo" pair, a-la subpath concept for regions, but that's another matter.)

Sorry for jumping in Jeremiah, but that's the occasion for me to ask
for a better surround/multichannel support in Soundminer,
globally ;-) .

Yes, what you're asking would be great, for example by selecting in
the main window what channel(s) should be spotted/transfered and
where, via a small matrix or something.
Say i have a 7.1 recording, and i just want to spot L/R to a stereo
track, or the C to a mono track, or the Ls/Rs to a stereo track, etc.,
ATM i can't, i have to spot the 7.1 to a 7.1 track, then move it to 8
mono tracks in PT, and then clearing, moving again whatever channels i
need in the project to other tracks... In Nuendo it's even worse...
This is very time consuming and frustrating (for me at least).

Same goes for monitoring, or downmixing.
Say i have an ambisonic b-format recording, ATM i just can't monitor
it in 5.1 or stereo through VST with the proper plugin (Surround Zone
or B2X)... And even if it was working, i would probably not be able to
spot/transfer a downmix to a stereo track or whatever (see above)...
Same goes for double-M/S and the such.

I know not many SM users work with surround source material, but all
this would be a big plus to Soundminer.

Bye.

I would love to see some sort of intelligently laid out matrix for
selecting which elements get spotted. The "mono" button is a start.
It could become a "downmix" button with a mix matrix behind it.

A nice matrix interface, supporting n-number of channels, can be found
in the theatrical sound playout app "QLab". A grid of incoming
channels on X-axis, out channels on Y-axis, with each cross point
being a gain control. A preset load/save interface could come pre-set
with typical 5.1 to stereo setups. Addition of phase-flip per input
would enable MS or Double-MS decoding.

Ha -

Once again I need this same function, and decide to search to see if there's any new info, and find my own post from six years ago....

To reiterate:
- Would love to spot L+R of 5.1 to stereo.  Same as we do "mono" but allow the picking of two channels not just one.
- Would love to be able to downmix during spotting as well.

Is it is, I just spot 5.1 then in the Region Bin in Pro Tools, grab the L and R and replace the L and C which got spotted.  More steps but it gets the job done.

Jeremiah,

Soundminer doesn't really use this site as we have our own forum.  I try to answer when I see something come in.

We understand the request.  It isn't however going to be part of 4.5.  There are other things being worked on but we are aware of this request. and understand the functionality.

As for your workaround, have you tried fiddling with the channel layout to perhaps drop LR onto a stereo channel?

Thx for the response, Steve -

I personally don't like changing the integrity of my database to be "wrong" just to fool Pro Tools into importing in a order I'd like.  I'd rather this be a global software setting.  But it seems a servicable idea, and if I did a LOT of it I probably would.

(I use SMPTE order, FWIW, it seems very intuitive to me.  So much so, I don't see the point of doing any other channel order!  ProTools default order just bit me too, having to deliver surround media for an installation piece, embedded into quicktime... Pro Tools forces such gyrations to deal with its inflexibility here... but I digress!)

For me, I don't require downmixing, would rather just grab the L+R channels.
It would seem the obvious thing for Soundminer would be to allow picking multiple channels (by e.g. shift-click or cmd-click?) in the waveform panel, the way we can pick one.  But yes I understand there are other projects, and this may not be so simple to implement.

All I can say is more coming, please join the forum and communicate with JD on this.

We however cannot change PT oddities, we have to workaround them.  The leg order field was created to do just that.

This is now in a beta build along with umpiring plugins and channel order... you'll need to be on the Soundminer forum to try it...
