As long as you don't change the filenames of the SFX on the external drive, it won't affect anything.  I do this all the time.  But, I usually go to User/Library/Application Support/Soundminer and manually copy the databases I need to travel with.  In fact, I keep them all on Dropbox.  Be aware of the difference between embedded and non-embedded metadata.

Your post reminds me of an important question:  We used to have "freelance mode" back in v3 which kept the databases on the external drive.  Does v4 support that?  I'd love to simplify my own mobile workflow.

Forgive me if this is elementary, but I have Soundminer V4Pro authorized via iLok and my SFX are on an external drive. The library files are on my desktop computer. I want to use a different laptop computer remotely with the same drive. Am I safe to rebuild the database on that laptop computer in Soundminer using the same drive? Will it corrupt or change anything on the drive itself once I reconnect the drive back to my desktop?

Yes, freelance still works in v4

Using Freelance Mode v4:

Create a folder named 'Soundminer Support' on your external drive and copy the DB files into the folders created there when launched in Freelance mode.
