The SoundersFC came out Saturday needing 3 points for a win to stay in
contention for a coveted MLS playoff spot. The mood amongst most
sounders fans was one of high hopes, but realistic expectations. The
Columbus Crew are a tough team, with an impressive home win record.
The Sounders on the other-hand, had been playing good soccer but felt
the sting of some bad breaks over the previous games.
As the game progressed, it was a scrap-fest with a lot of loose balls,
and penalties. The Sounders started to relax after Roger LeVesque
finds the back of the net in the 36th minute, a mere week after
finding fame <a href="

Seattle Singing icon</a>. Tyrone Marshall and the defense did a great
job of putting in the extra effort it took to win this game. Marshall
plucked a goal away from the crew in the 70th minute by clearing a
ball from the goal line, and maintaining the Sounders footing in the
game.
From this point, the wave of momentum grew for the Sounders, and we
rode it past a Crew shot off the post, and a very unlikely missed PK
from Guillermo Schelotto. (This was marked by the authors first ever
hugging of a complete stranger)
Sounders grab the 3 points they need, and keep the playoff dream
alive.
Kasey Keller:
“It was nice to have some things go our way. We had some decent
chances to extend (the lead), but at the same time you have to give
them a lot of credit, they obviously weren’t going to lose this record
easily,” Keller said. “They put some numbers forward, they threw it in
the box, they made it difficult for us. But somehow we were able to
hold on. Everybody fought really well all the way around the field and
that makes a big, big difference.”
