Dear Sound Studies Section members

I hope that all of you are holding up well enough during the ongoing pandemic.

It's hard to believe but SEM has sent out the first call for people to register for the 2020 annual conference. As you are aware, this coming conference will be held virtually. Although it will be a shame not to see many of you in person, I am still looking forward to the conference and hope to participate remotely on a few panels. We will also hold our first business meeting as a section.

Please remember that although the conference is virtual, you will still need to register. If you are planning to present, the registration date is 31st July--not too long from now.

With the conference and other section business in mind, I have a few questions to ask around:

(1) Are you planning to present at the upcoming SEM conference? For those of you proposed panels with section sponsorship, can you send me (dhat...@berklee.edu) an email to let me know whether your panel proposal was accepted?

(2) How might we conceive of ways to make the conference (a) more accessible given the situation and (b) still have some of the possibilities of conferences held in person?

(3) Would you consider serving as part of the curatorial team for a virtual version of SoundingBoard?

I look forward to hearing back from you all. Health,

DJ

Hi DJ,

In response to your questions:

1) We had discussed showing my 360 ambisonic doc 'Ancient Thoughts and Electric Buildings', I believe. I'd still be interested in exhibiting, if that's a possibility (online, of course) and/or presenting.
2) Most COVID conferences I've been involved in have both a real-time and archived component. I'm preparing for ISEA at the moment, and in that particular case the format will be to supply a pre-recorded artist talk with a link to a streaming version of the work.
3) Yes

Hope you're well!

Michael

Thank you so much for your email. I am not going to present but I wanted to answer question number 3:

(3) Would you consider serving as part of the curatorial team for a virtual version of SoundingBoard?
Yes ;)
