As-salamu Alaykum,
How will Imam Hussain (sA) be remembered in America? This is our 7th year commemorating Muharram In Manhattan (MIM). I still recall when our Majlies had just a handful of attendees, and we would have to go to three different locations during the course of the 10 days, and now we have over 110 attendees each night. When I established MIM I could have never foreseen the impact they have had on our community or the amazingly diverse community that would grow around our programming. My vision then was to create a safe space that was authenticly Shia. Where people could recall the Memory of Imam Hussain and commemorate the tragedy of Karbala in English. The original poetry that is recited at are programs, is the best Muharram poetry in the English language. The growth, with the blessings of Ahlul-bayt has far exceeded my expectations. The support of the community and our congregation has allowed us to grow each year.
We are also blessed to have the support of the Islamic Center of New York University, which under the guidance of Imam Khalid Latif has created an ideal space, inclusive and inviting. This year we have created a historic new Shia Shia Chaplaincy position at NYU, Sh.Faiyaz Jaffer has filled this role and will help better service the needs of our community.
Our hard work and efforts have been recognized by the Mayor of New York Bill de Blasio. This is the second year we have received recognition from the Mayor regarding our Muharram Programing, addressing our community, and for first time supporting Shia Chaplaincy at NYU. Please see the Mayor's letter attached to this e-mail.
Our Muharram in Manhattan Majlises at IC-NYU will be continuing tonight at 7pm. Each night will cost us around $1700, inclusive of all food and program costs. Make a tax-deductible contribution to NYU Muharram fund.
Jazak'Allah Khair
