For the last couple of days, Soulseek has been unusable for me. When I open the app, I can navigate around the tabs for a few seconds before it freezes and becomes unresponsive, but then I have to force quit it in order to get out. I have noticed that my queued uploads are rapidly fluctuating between 'requesting' and 'aborted', with none successfully uploading at all. I cannot adjust the settings in the app either, if it has not already frozen by the time I get there, it does when I try to click something.

On jan 21, a dialogue box came up saying there had been a 'document drag error' or something. It may have listed a specific file or directory, but I cannot remember. I restarted the program, and it seemed to run as normal until yesterday.

I have tried installing the newest build, but it does not make a difference. Do i need to clean-install?

Thank you for any help and advice.

Same here. Have installed the developer build on Big Sur and no change - worked for a little while but now, even after a restart, Soulseek just hangs and freezes with spinning beach ball after a few minutes of use. It's unusuable sadly. Any sign of any fix for this or what is causing it?

I have been testing the new build (2021-2-6) and so far it is proving to be much snappier, responsive, and not bogged down on searches containing a large amount of results. I had really been having freezing issues when trying to apply my minbitrate:320 filter while loading search results but that seems to be a non-issue now.

On top of that, after force quitting the stalled app, I can't reopen it without a full system restart. Not that it does me much good, because it demonstrates the freezing behavior immediately after the next fresh launch. Distressing!

Same here. Latest version of Soulseek won't even open now that i have Big Sur. Is there anything else like Soulseek that will work?

Same for me.  Opens then stalls. I have to force quit and re start for it to start again and then it quickly freezes up again. Bummer!

I get constant freezes on MacBook Pro running Big Sur. Freezes are related to the program looking for changes in your Shared folders in the background. Problem is, the more you've shared the worse this problem becomes. My major issue is trying to unsure a shared folder. The developer Nir has said that clicking on an already shared folder should change the 'Share Folder' button to 'Unshare Folder' I've never, ever seen this happen.

BTW: to avoid rebooting when SoulseekQT refuses to relaunch after a forced quit, open Terminal and type 'sudo' followed by a space. Right click on the SoulseekQT application and select 'Show Package Contents'  Navigate to: Contents > MacOS where you'll find the binary file SoulseekQT.

Click, drag and drop this file anywhere in the open Terminal window and press 'Enter' When asked, enter your user's password and press 'Enter' again (NB: password does not register on the screen. It looks like you're not typing anything) The OS will now open and run SoulseekQT as the 'Root' user.

I haven't been able to reproduce the issue on Big Sur 11.5.2, but sometimes newer versions of Qt offer better compatibility with newer operating systems. This is built against Qt 5.12.11:

I'm on Mac, Big Sur 11.6, the 2021.9.10 version is better than the 2021.2.6 but the spinning wheel of death is here also,
My humble opinion it is when the app is searching a large database with a common word the wheel start spinning

having the same issue. i had been using 2021-2-6 on 10.14.6 without any issues but a few days ago for whatever reason it stopped being responsive as soon as i open it. i tried the new version (2021.9.10) as well without any success.

Where did you get this new version (2021.9.10) ? i'm not seeing any mention of it anywhere. I haven't been able to run the app in months for the same reason. Have they stopped developing? This seems like a common enough problem to want to fix- I'm sure the # of users is down because of it...

To anyone having these problems, at the time they occur:

  • How many files are you sharing?
  • Roughly how many search windows do you have open?
  • How many browse user's files windows do you have open?
  • Do you have a lot of downloads/uploads going on? Do the problems happen when you don't have any transfers going?
  • Can you check Activity Monitor to see how much memory the client is taking?

Same here 3rd time in 3 days, crashing cold turkey / hard reset after running for a while. I can send logs to devs if helpful.

@Nir

I get the impression that when a lot of search results show up in any given search window, the MacOS Client os bogging down. My observation this behaviour/BUG is related to the amount of search results returned ....

Hi all, I just switched to a new MBP 16" M1 Max chip (Monterey 12.0.1) and having crashes too.

In my case the crashes are not search specific. It has exactly to do with the audio somehow. I can open soulseek and search anything, and download without problems. It's 100% stable.

HOWEVER. If ever there is something playing audio at the same time that soulseek is downloading, it freezes up the entire OS and the laptop just reboots cold.

It happened with:
- Soulseek + Traktor Pro
- Soulseek + JRiver Media Player
- Soulseek + Youtube Video on Chrome

So the constant is Soulseek. Also, if, for example, both of the above software pairs are open, soulseek is searching/downloading and NO music is playing, it's stable, no crashes whatsoever. But if the moment I play some music, the crash is almost instant.

Hope this info can help pinpoint what is going on.

Sup guys! I'm having the same problem here! Slow navigation, crashes sometimes, slow searches and scroll... After reading this group, I had the ideia to close everything and see what happens.
So, I closed iTunes, Google Chrome and Splice, I even stopped my Dropbox and Google Drive. I had literately just Soulseek (build 2021.2.6) running, and guess what, it worked perfectly!
Fast searches, no bugs, no freeze and no slow navigation through files and tabs.

I'm running a iMac 21.5" (2011), 20GB RAM, SSD, High Sierra 10.13.6

I hope I can help someone with this post!

Take care guys! Greetings from Brazil!

this helped for me, running M1 Pro OS 12.0.1
search is still laggy when it gets additional results, but at least it does not crash my computer anymore or freeze as badly as before.
