New 64-bit Windows build

If you're on Windows, you share a lot of files (or browse a lot of shares) and the client often crashes for you, there's a good chance it's just running out of memory. Thanks to forum user David H. for persevering through weeks of trying out different builds and sending dozens of crash reports until we finally figured out it was all just a memory problem. Bear in mind that even though the 64-bit build can use as much memory as it needs, it *will* use more memory. There are a lot of pointers flying around, and those are now all double the size. If you run into any problems with the new build, please post about it here.

The Mac build is already 64-bit, but newer versions of Qt do sometimes include compatibility updates for newer versions of OSX. I built this just now against the newest LTS version of Qt (5.12.4):

Hello Nir,

I am running into a repeated freeze problem.  First, it takes a long to time to start up and then freezes repeatedly.  I don't have AVG, but use Avira so I turned it off - still has the problem.  I also tried running it with authority elevated (on Windows 10). It's weird because it worked fine yesterday after I installed.  Soulseek is not running out of resources according to task manager. I made a dmp file, but don't know if that will have captured the issue - I can email it to you if you wish.

taaj: I seem to remember a number of people saying the client was freezing for them on Windows 10. It might have something to do with it being a new executable that Microsoft doesn't recognize. Normally the freezes stop after the client's been used for a while.

Jorge: Ah yeah, that's probably why. Qt doesn't seem super optimized on OSX. It should work ok under most circumstances, but a million shared files, with the search results and file transfer that generates is definitely a lot for the client to handle...

Updated from SoulseekQt-2017-2-20 (32 bit) on Windows 10 (64 bit).
-> Windows protection does not allow to run the installer, however, it can be executed if You click on detalis, and run.
-> The installer installs (updates) the 64-bit version to c:\Program Files (x86)\SoulseekQt\ wich is not the correct location for 64 bit applications. It was an update and not a clean install.
-> All settings, clients, chat logs, downloads, ... seems to be imported correctly from prev. version. 
-> The client runs smoothly. No download so far, but the uploads are okay.
-> It consumes ~65 MiB of memory, with  ~16.000 shared files. 
-> Search  is not tested yet. Nor running the client for hours/days.

Today 2019.7.22 x64 build crashed for the first time for me (after 23 days of uptime, but still). When it crashed Slsk was in the tray and I wasn't doing anything in it. I don't know if that matters, but every few hours I clean completed and aborted uploads and I didn't have any Browse user's file tab opened when it happend.

I'm on Windows 8.1 and I have 16GB of RAM.

appimages tend not to fix it wholly as it burdens you into deciding what to compile statically, while flatpaks have standarized runtimes that work between all linuxes, and also handle updates

my client show closed ports sometimes for no reason. only client restart can change this back to normal.

The 2019.07.22 has no upload option, like the earlier low-mem clients.

Hi Nir, seems you have fixed the issue with my massive share list, but now i have a new issue. the programe becomes unresponsive after a very short while and i cannot do anything with it. i cant click tabs or scroll thru the uploads i am uploading i just cant do anything at all not even close the program. i have to force close the program in windows when i want to shut the program down. if i just want to look at what i am uploading at the current time i have to force close it then start soulseek then i can use the program for a little while but then it starts to hang again and slow my whole system down untill i force close it again? anybody else suffering this issue? Allso i am only sharing a tiny amount of my stuff at the moment, around 350,000 songs albums. im to scared to add the other 1.5million items as i am worried i wont be able to use the program at all if its locking up on 350,000 files very weird.

gday Nir, i was having issues with slsk freezing on my win 7 64bit system, so i upgraded to win 10 64bit, now i have a new issue surprise surprise,  soulseek cant see my music drive which is a nas unit hardwired thru my switch. i have never had this issue before and i am at a loss. have you heard of anybody else with this issue? i can access it thru windows and everything else but it is like the drive does not exist when trying to add shares in slsk. ill keep trying to figure it out, but if anybody has any ideas that would be great.

allright this is weird, i used to share my music folder like this >   x:\music  just like any other harddrive in windows. now i have to share the drive thru networking so now in soulseek it looks like this>  //music-box/music/music  bit weird? but i think its working. i now have to rescan so ill let you know what happends and if people can access the tunes or not.

sebat: That does seem extreme... how many files are you sharing? How long does it take it to get to the point it uses up that much memory?

Michael: I vaguely remember other users complaining about not being able to index network drives. IIRC it's a limitation of Qt. At some point I'm hoping to start replacing parts of the client with OS-specific code to handle problems like that one, but it'll probably happen as part of a larger effort to rewrite the most problematic parts of the client (the memory database causing all that memory consumption for one), or maybe even a completely new client, so I can't promise anything at this point...

Hi Nir, i was very exited about this new version since it seems to resolve an issue i reported a year ago but i installed the version now and it even uses less memory than before, but thats not correct.

All my shares in soulseek are network shares on a fileserver/nas and i can only choose local drives in this new version.

Is it up to me or is it a bug?

well im fucked if i know whats going on with soulseek. i have upgraded ram , doubled the amount of ram in the system, no luck doing that so i upgraded to windows 10, that didn't make any difference, so i have tried running in compatible mode, all of them, win95 win 98 winxp win xp service pack, win 7 win 8 win 10. no change, program becomes so laggy it takes 10 minutes for anything i click on in it to work. this makes the program unusable. people can download from me for around 5 10 mins then uploads to other users hang. i have to force close and reopen slsk. im lost as to what is causing this issue. ive done my part, not much more i can think of to try. hopefully nir is working on a totally different version of soulseek to test out. or then again maybe hes gonna take a big break either way if a new version pops up ill be trying it out. all i can think of is that this must be a runtime issue or something that is causing this. i am no programmer so i aint going to start removing shit from my system to figure it out. unless someone here knows what runtimes this program uses so i can then just remove reinstall which one it is. i cracked the shits and installed 157 NS 13e deciding id use that, but just as my fucked life dictates it worked sweet when i installed it and i added my music drive to it thinking yes this will work. but alas upon restart of slsk 157 NS 13e that music drive is the only drive slsk now cant find or read as in its as if the drive does not exist, god damn it. the universe just does not seem to want me to share my music with anyone. someone shoot me now please, put me out of my misery.

I was using an older soulseek version, 32 bit. Today I've found the new 64 bit version and downloaded, installed. Then, it is repeatdly showing not possible to connect. I've uninstalled, as I saw it was installing in Program Files (x36), which would be a problem. But there's no way to install it in another, or the proper one (Program Files - which is 64bit). Unfortunatelly, I cannot make connection to soulseek in anyway now. What should I do?

Gregory Hamyl you can choose were you want to install it when you are installing it. as for the no connection have you allowed it thru your firewall ? is your username and password correct ? have you tried running it in compatibility mode to see if that makes a difference? my copy is installed in the program files(86) folder and it starts and connects fine.

on a side note, does anybody have any idea why some uploads to user get denied?  i see albums that are denied to people but i am not denying any uploads at all! i see it quite a bit to be honest and i am at a loss as to why this is happening. i am just curious as to why this happends. i have had some users complaining to me that i block them from getting some mp3s or albums and i am not.

This should install to Program Files by default. I added 64-bit flags to the Inno installer script, so I think it does more than just install to the right location:

Michael, I thought about your freezes some more, and it occurred to me that it's something people have always been complaining about under Windows 10 whenever I'd release a new executable, but then the problem would go away after a while. My guess is that Windows 10 does something to hamper the operation of executables it doesn't know yet, but stops when the executable becomes more well known. Might be worth to give it some time.

Sebat, you can dump the client data to file and send it to me, I'll take a look at it. You can do so by first activating the Diagnostics tab by checking Options->UI->Show diagnostics, then going to the diagnostics tab and clicking the Dump Data button at the top, it'll ask you which file to save to. If you already have the Diagnostics tab open, that may be a big part of what's consuming your memory, but either way it's better to deactivate it when you no longer need it. 

There's a good chance though that there's nothing that can be done about this without a big redesign of the client. The memory database is not very efficient, and if you share a lot of files you're going to see some very big consumption... but yeah I'm happy to take a look at that data file.

Nir: So it's been 4 days after turning off diagnostics and after 4 days of uptime it's using only 500MB (according to Task manager), it's still growing, but at much slower pace (~20MB daily). Sorry for wasting your time :)

I know this isn't where we're supposed to post this...but it seems like this is the only place you actually monitor? there's a slsk user who goes by the name of "Ripper", currently "Dr .DossAttack", who is DDOS attacking slsk users. Can you please help with this situation; it's illegal even, as far as I know. He's currently using the IP 73.68.19.47, but historically used 75.172.165.22

I banned that username/IP, but this Ripper guy's been around for over a decade, just trying to fuck shit up any way they can. Historically he's used a lot of proxies and a lot of different usernames, so I don't know how much good this is going to do. Hello: I am running Windows 10, on an Acer desktop Pc.

Allowed my pc to update with windows updates last night (January 15) and upon starting up my pc this morning, all was good with my PC, however upon trying to open up SoulSeek, it froze so badly after a minute or two in use, that I had to shut down my pc entirely, and went through this three times, before uninstalling the build, Qt 2017.2.20

I then installed the latest build QT build 2019.7.22 Still froze badly and had to do the same, shutting down the PC to enable me to close SoulSeek. As a last resort, installed old unsupported 157 NS 13e, and it seems to be working fine, no freeze ups thus far. Can someone please tell me what might have gone wrong all of a sudden. My PC is a 64 bit, and appears to have more then enough memory, but still the freeze ups with the QT programs. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Have been on SS for 6-8 years now, never an issue. Also donate fairly regularly, and share well over 100 thousand files on average at any one time. Thanks Cam. I am user name WexfordRaider on SS.

Hi folks. I now to am experiencing the issues on SoulSeek build 2019, where all my downloads are aborting before they can even get started. I uninstalled the QT 64 bit 2019 build, and installed the recommended 32 bit QT 2018 build. No difference, all attempted downloads are being aborted as they turn red. Have advised Nir, and hope soon there will be a fix for myself and other users. This just came on suddenly today, as I have not logged on for several days to that username. Was no updates from Windows 10 since last on, several days ago.

Hi Nir i have tried all builds and the only one that works is 157 NS 13e-previous versions that i have tried all result in- login failed reported failure reason socket error.Please change your login settings in the options tab and try re-connecting.

I havent changed anything in the newer builds.

The 2020.3.12 builds were provided as test versions for something that turned out to be a problem with Comcast Xfinity, so as far as I remember there was never any confirmation that they were necessary. You can get them here, they're built using a newer version of Qt:

They use a later version of Qt and the installer which sometimes solves compatibility issues with newer versions of Windows, but no improvements beyond that.
