REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS: TEACHING SOCIAL ACTIVISM IN THE CLASSROOM
How does teaching social activism in the classroom prepare students to be active citizens in their communities, the city, and beyond?
On March 16 and 17, 2013, the Museum of the City of New York will host Teaching Social Activism in the Classroom. Educators of all grade levels are invited to present and participate in this two-day conference, which will highlight the various tools and techniques used by teachers to engage their students in the history and practice of social change, inspired by the content of the Museum’s groundbreaking exhibition, Activist New York. Educators, activists, and historians will present their work to one another and will discuss the best practices for teaching this important subject to children of all ages. Sponsored by the Puffin Foundation, the conference is free.

The Museum requests session proposals that address the following questions:
- How do you teach your students about social activism – from a historical or contemporary perspective?
- How do you encourage your students to respond to contemporary social issues?
- How do you teach students to understand both sides of debates and issues?
- What activities do your students participate in beyond the school day that help them understand social change?
- Are teachers social activists?
- Have you and your students participated in any partnerships that have broadened their understanding and increased their passion for social issues?
Panels, presentations and interactive workshops are encouraged. Please reference any pertinent primary and secondary resources you would use in your session and how they support the Common Core State Standards. Also mention if you need and audio or visual equipment to run your session.
