Hey School,
A collective... THE collective, Nsumi, is hosting a thinktank this coming weekend at School of the Future.  It will be one of the most innovative and adventurous moments at the school, and I want to encourage you all to participate.  As I see it, it is a brainstorming session about how people in academia can use the resources and networks available through these concrete stodgy institutions to turn them inside out.  Through developing a network of rebellious and creative students and teachers, Nsumi is trying to save the academic landscape by planting seeds of mutant anarchy and revolution in any visible crack of our educational systems.  The official description is below, including ways to participate and a more refined description.  I recommend coming in a dragon costume, or in drag.

Mutant Student Groups Think Tank, by Nsumi Collective

Students and teachers are invited to join us as we re-imagine what a
student organization can be. “Mutant Student Groups” is a 3-day Think Tank
composed of workshops, discussions, activities and readings focused on
starting experimental extra-curricular organizations within colleges and
high schools.

We will create a bridge between extra-curricular school-based activities
and non-conformist art drawing from Dadaism, Futurism, flash mobs,
happenings, performance art, net art, and discordianism. We will question
the traditions and social patterns of student-led organizations and
collectively design new and unconventional groups. We will analyze how
such groups might come into being in various social, economic and
geographic contexts and provide concrete advise and direction to students
or teachers who want to start a mutant group.

To participate in this event please email swi...@nsumi.net with your
affiliation (e.g. “student”, “teacher”, ”mom”, “poet”) and whether you
would like to be a full 3-day participant—which involves filling out a
brief questionnaire—or a “Drop-In”/part-time participant. Drop-ins are
welcome to join us Friday July 23rd @ 6pm or Saturday July 24th @ 12 noon.
Sections of this event will take place outside of the SotF campus, so
please be sure to RSVP either way and join our text-blast.

Hi SoTF

I am working on a collective/collaborative textbook making project at
SoTF. We had our first workshop last week and it was super! Got some
good pages already...
It would be awesome if all you great people out there facilitating and
attending SoTF's classes would contribute pages as a record of the
summer's topics and experiments. If you are interested you can lay
something out and send me however many 8.5 x 11 pdfs and it will be
added to the book. The only parameters I am interested in is that you
make clear some sort of title for the page/topic. This will be printed
b&w most likely.

Feel free to include opinions, reflections or approach this as a record
of the curriculum you created or some other document of your participation.

Looking forward to a brilliant table of contents...

January break is the ticket...! I have not assembled the PDFS or typed up scrolls. Got a job which overtook my life for now. But I would love to jump back in to this once my semester is done.

hey all,

yes i think this winter break sounds good!
below is an outline of two tasks i keep starring at and wish i had time to work more on:

1. Online Archive:

 for each class/project:

Course Logistics

Teaching/Learning Strategies

Description

Image

Class Title

Teacher(s)

Date/Recurring

Artifacts/Resources

Approximate No. of Students

2. SotF Planning Guide for the Future (for teaching students)

  1. Planning and Logistics - What are we doing here in this community?
  2. The Site - Responding to locality, environment and neighborhood; Architecture
  3. People - Recruitment, teaching bodies, student teachers
  4. System - What do you want to learn, what do you want to teach?
  5. Implementation - Architecture, the elements
  6. Research and Documentation
with combined forces and collaborative zeal i think i can look at this for more than 10 minutes!
hugs

i won't be physically present winter break, but would love to participate somehow...
in producing the archive, giving more reflections or input for the future of SotF
(also thinking about how SotF could make a visit/extend to Berlin...)

is the Nsumi think tank this weekend?
what are the exact times/dates?

love to all,
catherine
