Instead of using the onboard sound, I installed a PCI sound card. I then connected the front audio panel to that sound card (so I can have mic and headphone jacks working with the sound card). All works fine.
I think garama is right about when you plug something into the front jack it disables the back. Thats the way it works on my system but mine is a custom build.
If you go with a PCI card the front jacks will no longer function at all as both the front and rear use the integrated sound.
Possibly you could get a y splitter from Radio Shack or something so your son can use his headphones.

Location, location, location. No matter what audio equipment you have, proper speaker placement can significantly improve your listening experience. Here are 7 quick tips to help you get the most out of your stereo speakers:
Accurate stereo imaging gives the impression that each sound is coming from a different place. Imagine the sound of an entire band coming from a single point in space, with each instrument stacked on top of each other. This would be a poor stereo image. Now imagine unpacking those sounds so that each instrument is spread out from left to right - as if the musicians were standing on a stage in front of you. This is a good stereo image.
Remember that walls reflect sound, too. Speakers should be at least 2-3 feet away from the nearest wall (especially if your speaker is in a corner). Many speakers have rear-facing bass ports. Positioning a rear bass port too close to the wall will reflect sound waves, resulting in time smearing. If your speakers have front-facing bass ports, then you should be able to get away with having them a little closer to the wall.
To use front headphone socket for remapped headphone output, use hdajackretask to create a boot override to change the channel map for Green Headphone, front side to use rear surround channels
The Apply Now button in hdajackretask works only if software audio servers (Pulseaudio etc) are stopped. Applied changes are only applied for current session, wheras boot override works every time system is booted (assuming the overrides have been configured to the audio codec)
To do this, you will remove the Ring app from your phone, reboot your phone (turn it off/on) and then reinstall the app. Once you reinstall the app, make sure you have all sounds turned up, log into the app, allow notifications, and then test to see if the sound comes up. Hope this helps!
The next best step is to check your motion alert settings. From the dashboard of your Ring app, open the Menu, select Devices, then select the Ring device in question. You will now be on the device page and presented with options specific to it. Please check your Motion Snooze, Motion Settings, and Smart Alerts tiles. This will allow you to confirm these motion alert based options are set to how you desire. I hope this helps!
Then, you will have to enable system notifications for your browser of choice in your Mac/Windows settings. You can follow the same steps as Mac desktop app and Windows desktop app but for your browser application instead of the Front application.
Usually, a computer has single audio ports located either at the sides or at the front. The Front audio jack stands for the front headphones or microphone ports on a personal computer. Sometimes, you may encounter the Front audio jack not working Windows 10 like many users.
The main reason for Front audio jack not working is related to the bad connection between the motherboard and the jack. In addition, improper audio device settings and outdated drivers are responsible for the problem.
Step 4. Toggle on the switch of Disable front panel jack detection and click on OK to save the change. If it is enabled, you can disable first and re-enable.
If the required audio device to the Front audio jack is not set as default, you may encounter Windows 10 headphone jack not working. To fix it, you can change the audio device settings via the steps below:
Step 2. Go to the Playback tab if you are connecting a headphone or speaker to the front audio jack, and then right-click the audio device and select Set as Default Device. After that, click on OK. If you connect to a microphone, then navigate to the Recording tab.
As mentioned above, the Front audio jack not working Windows 10 can be caused by outdated or corrupted audio device drivers. To fix the issue, you can try updating the audio device driver to the latest version.
Step 2. In the Device Manager window, expand the Sound, video and game controllers category, and then right-click on the Realtek audio driver and select Update driver.
After that, you can check if the Front audio jack not working Windows 10 problem is gone. If not, you can select Uninstall from the Device Manager. Once uninstalled, you can restart your computer and the default audio driver will be automatically installed.
A computer usually has front audio jacks that are connected to your motherboard. Once the connection is loose or bad, you may encounter Windows 10 headphone jack not working. So, we recommend you check if there are any issues with the front jack only.
A new approach achieves independent listening zones within a car by using small, modified speakers to produce directional sound fields and a signal processing strategy that optimizes the audio signals used to drive each of the speakers. The new design will be presented at the 21st International Congress on Acoustics (ICA 2013), held June 2-7 in Montreal.
Today, car cabins often reverberate with the sounds of music, video soundtracks, navigation system instructions, telecommunications, and warning sounds. Problems arise, however, when occupants of the same car want to listen to different programs. The driver may require navigation system instructions and warning sounds, while the kids in the back seat want to watch a movie. Intergenerational audio conflict might be avoided, however, with a new type of car speaker system.
The necessary degree of isolation between the two listening zones depends on the audio program, he explains. For example, if speech is being reproduced at the front seats and pop music is playing in the rear seats, a higher level of isolation is required than if pop music were playing in both zones.
Future work on the system will factor in the effect of the audio program selection on the required system performance. Based on this information, the researchers will continue to explore improvements to both loudspeaker configuration and digital signal processing.

I have a 2015 Journey SXT AWD with a 4.3S radio with 6 speakers (I am not sure if that helps). I noticed one day my front speakers aren't working. It is not the balance/fade adjustment. I checked the fuse for the radio under the passenger side dash and it was not bad. I am kind of at a loss. Any ideas?
Ok, I will unhook the battery when I get home and let it sit awhile (I am willing to try anything) Unfortunately it has high mileage and is out of the warranty period. I recently had it in for a recall on the brakes and they told me it is an 80 dollar charge just to look at it. I would like the front speakers to work and I am willing to get my hands dirty but I don't know if I want to put a ton of money into a stock sound system.
If I plug the header into the motherboard's audio will it direct my soundcard'a audio back to the motherboard and to the front panel? Or would I I have to enable the motherboard's built on audio for that to happen (and it wouldn't use the Audigy at all when using the front panel headphones).
4. MODE/STORE BUTTON - Used for AM/FM mode. Press to cycle the tuning mode between Preset, Auto, and Manual modes. Pressing and holding the button will allow the current selected station frequency to be stored in the preset bank.
7. DISPLAY - Used to display information such as the selected input source, volume and tone/balance levels. When the FM or AM tuner input is selected, the radio frequency or RDS station name will be displayed.
9. MENU BUTTON - Pressing this once will select the Bass option. Pressing a second time will select the Treble option and pressing a third time will select the Balance option. When one of these options is selected, the volume control will adjust the level.
12. AUX INPUT SOCKET - This source input allows you to connect a portable audio device, such as a smart phone, directly into the front of the unit using a 3.5mm stereo-jack. Once plugged in, this input is automatically selected.
