Hi SOREEL’ers

It has been such a long time since we met, and I would love to connect with you all.  We certainly have a lot to catch up on.  Since these meetings are notoriously difficult to plan, I’d like to propose a couple of ideas.

I suggest Thursday 5/22 OR Thursday 5/29.  from 4:30-6pm.

Because it’s spring, I propose that our meeting should be either hybrid or fully-virtual.  If some of us prefer to meet in person, I would also like people to be able to call in.  Does anyone have a suggestion of a location where we could host a hybrid meeting?

To keep from spamming the whole list with your replies, feel free to email me directly with your thoughts.  (Unless you have a question for everyone, of course!)  I’ll try firm things up with another email by the end of this week.

Thanks everyone!  I hope you’re all doing well.

Libby

Let’s get students out there!

Oregon State University is located in the traditional territory of the Ampinefu, or Mary’s River band of the Kalapuya. After the Kalapuya Treaty (Treaty of Dayton) in 1855, Kalapuya people were forcibly removed to what are now the Grand Ronde and Siletz reservations, and are now members of Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon (https://www.grandronde.org) and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (http://ctsi.nsn.us).

Hi SOREEL

Let’s see if I can herd the cats!  So far, the best proposed meeting time seems to be:  Thursday, May 22, 2025, 3:00 - 5:00pm

I know this is a quick turnaround, but at least one of the agenda items is time sensitive.

If you’re interested in this meeting, please visit this QUICK SURVEY.  You can answer about whether you plan attend in-person or over zoom.  Please also look at the agenda we have so far, and suggest other agenda items for discussion.

Thanks everyone!

Libby

Hi SOREEL friends,

I have heard that several people can make it to a gathering next Thursday.  That may not work for everyone, but Jen Aguayo has topics that need to be brought to the group sooner, rather than later.

Date: Thursday, May 22

Time: 3:00 – 5:00 PM

Location (in-person): KS Wild office. 562 A St. Ashland. Thanks Frances!

Location (virtual): https://oregonstate.zoom.us/j/93672768451?pwd=iUVFpoXlTg5bRXVNXZrAydJaQioiZ5.1&from=addon

Agenda:

  1. Consider how SOREEL partners can respond to losing North Mountain Park from our network.
    1. NMP's educational resources and kits
    2. Loss of community events, or strategies to keep those going?
  2. KBO and BLM partners to discuss plan for installing Chronolog stations on popular trails in the Rogue Valley. How can we get students involved in the project?
  3. Ideas for future meetings?  Increased collaboration on programs and common mission
  4. Quick program updates.

Do you have anything to add to the agenda?   Just email me.

Would you like me to send you a calendar invitation?  Let me know.

Looking forward to seeing some of you next week.

I look forward to hosting folks next week.  Please feel free to bring snacks and beverages to share (alcohol is OK to bring).

This is a time of change for many of us and if we seek to keep EE strong and vital in the region, it is important that we are in touch and continue in a collaborative way. SOREEL can continue to be an open space for networking.  Feel free to invite others to join our Google Group listserv

Libby: let's add to the agenda:
  • check-in about Google Group, confirm admin responsibilities and access
  • check-in about possibly updating the SOREEL website

Frances

      Hi SOREEL,

I really appreciated the great meeting we had last week.  Read down for a summary of our wide-ranging discussion.

Mark your calendars for our next meeting: 7/24 at 3pm.

      Notes:

      1. Responding to the loss of North Mountain Park from our network.

Jen Aguayo shared the current, uncertain situation within Ashland Parks and Recreation.  Jen has been laid off from her role as Nature Center Coordinator, and it seems that the City may close the Center.  Jen expressed that they have no interest in reviving youth field trips or any of their historical programming, and that whole rooms full of curriculum resources, science equipment and even the “Collection” may eventually be disposed of.

We talked through many different potential scenarios. There are many people in the SOREEL network who would be willing to store, utilize or otherwise abscond with and protect the educational materials, if Ashland Parks and Rec is not planning to use them.  Overall, we agreed that the preferred solution would be to encourage Ashland Parks and Rec to continue to steward and share those resources with the community.  To encourage this outcome, a working group will draft a letter on behalf of SOREEL.  They will send this letter to the Ashland City Council, Mayor and Parks Commission.

The working group includes: Kristina Lefever, Daniel C, Daniel S, Sara Jones, Johnnie Snow, Christine Brautigam, Paul Sheldon, and Libby will help if I can.  Keep your eyes open for emails from this team, if they need support.

Note: We focused on North Mountain Park’s educational resources, and we didn’t have time to discuss the loss of Salmon Festival and Rogue Valley Bird Day.

      1. SOREEL Website

We maintain a web presence here: https://sites.google.com/view/soreel/ But that website hasn’t really been used or updated since COVID originally made it a necessity.  We are hoping to update the list of participating organizations, AND the program listings.  Having an updated web presence will give more weight to our voices when SOREEL send the proposed letter to City of Ashland Officials.  Let’s all go in and update the records, so it’s clear just how many community organizations are represented under the banner of SOREEL.

Do we know who has editing permissions on those spreadsheets?

      1. Chronolog Stations

Frances followed up about this with an email to the list serv.  I will also forward a communication from Beth Boos, Rogue River Watershed Council.

      1. Upcoming Meetings

We are going to try to go back to meeting more regularly.  It feels important, to strengthen the SOREEL community during these volatile times.  To simplify scheduling, we decided to pick a date and time for the next meeting.

We plan to remain consistent, by meeting on the last Thursday of the month at 3pm.  Locations will alternate between KS Wild, ScienceWorks, and the Children’s Museum of Southern Oregon.  All these locations can host hybrid meetings.  In addition, we’d also like to hold at one meeting that’s fully in-person, preferably outdoors, with pizza!

      Next Meeting:

      July 24, 3:00-5:00pm

@ ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum  (Thanks Johnnie!)

A huge thank you to everyone who attended last week, and shared some motivation and hope!!!

      Hugs,

      Libby
