Fun study shows venting or diverting anger into exercise doesn’t work as well as calming down by meditating, deep breathing, or mindfulness. Maybe my dad was right about counting to ten!

Willow-Witt Ranch is located within the ancestral homelands of the Shasta, Takelma, Athabaskan, and Latgawa peoples who lived here since time immemorial. These Tribes were displaced during rapid Euro-American colonization, the Gold Rush, and armed conflict between 1851 and 1856. In the 1850s, the discovery of gold and settlement brought thousands of Euro-Americans to their lands, leading to warfare, epidemics, starvation, and villages being burned. In 1853 the first of several treaties were signed, confederating these Tribes and others together - who would then be referred to as the Rogue River Tribe. These treaties ceded most of their homelands to the United States, and in return they were guaranteed a permanent homeland reserved for them. At the end of the Rogue River Wars in 1856, these Tribes and many other Tribes from western Oregon were removed to the Siletz Reservation and the Grand Ronde Reservation. Today, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon (https://www.grandronde.org) and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians (http://www.ctsi.nsn.us/) are living descendants of the Takelma, Shasta, and Latgawa peoples of this area. We encourage YOU to learn about the land you reside on, and to join us in advocating for the inherent sovereignty of Indigenous people. We also acknowledge that Euro-American colonists excluded, marginalized, enslaved, tortured, and murdered many other descendants of slaves, darker-skinned people, Chinese and other Asian and Pacific Island immigrants, Mexican workers, and others.  We cannot change these tragic events of the past, but we acknowledge them and invite you to join us in doing what we can to bring justice and equity to all, as we move together into a more resilient, inclusive, and just future.

Thanks for sharing, Paul. This is great and reinforces my experiences with helping angry kids navigate their anger by slowing down in nature, listening for sounds, breathing, looking at colors and shapes, and kind of "shared meditating" in a way.

Paul,
Great support for the techniques we learn in SOCAN's Sustaining Climate Activists. We probably need to meet more than monthly, but it's better than nothing to remind us what works.

Thanks - Kathy

They need to study the calming effects of an hour long smoke; hand rolled cigar, a cup of tea with a good friend watching the birds fly by. I would sign up for that study 😉🌳💪

Ha!
My friend Doug, the lifelong cigar smoker who recently survived throat cancer might disagree about the cigar, but my dad insisted that walking around the campfire smoking a cigar kept mosquitoes away ;)

I’m with you on the tea, friends, and birds.

Hi All,

I wanted to share an event on May 2nd called Sparking Action! to forward in your networks and, a June 5th smoke training for schools and childcare centers.

Please see the attached Sparking Action event. We are trying to get this shared in our networks. We will have everything preparedness at the event.

Also, please see the following training for schools and childcare centers…

We are hoping a representative or a few folks can come for a training at SOU on smoke preparedness. Our audience for this is administration, facilities directors and champion teachers who may want to include air cleaning and smoke curriculum in their classrooms. Please see the details on the training below.

Smokewise Ashland, Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collaborative, Southern Oregon University and partners with Oregon State University’s ASPIRE Center invite you to attend smoke readiness training on Friday, June 5th.  Going into the 2026 wildfire season, with record low snowpack and warmer than normal temperatures this spring, we have an increased urgency for delivering smoke resources to schools, childcare centers, outdoor schools, and spaces serving children (libraries and learning spaces/children's museums).

Air Cleaners, Air Quality Monitors, Replacement Filters, N-95 Respirators and Smoke Planning:

Funding and supplies will be made available for organizations who participate in the June 5th training. Space is limited and we ask you to please register in advance to secure space.

Microgrants and resources for air quality monitoring and indoor air quality improvement are available (quantities limited).

Date: Friday, June 5, 2026

Time: 12:00-4:00 pm PT

Here is the link to register for the smoke readiness training on Friday, June 5th: https://smokereadinesstraining.rsvpify.com/

Thank You!

Sara
