Hi all,

As many of you know, SOU is going through yet another difficult stretch. Many of us are alumni, employ SOU students, or work directly with the university. The report released May 4 outlines a structural deficit, possible program eliminations, and a sustainability deadline of June 30, 2027.

The Save Southern Oregon University Coalition held a public forum this week at the Medford Library. The recording can be found here.

If you want to get involved, the coalition has put together a quick letter-writing campaign with ready-to-send scripts to the Higher Education Coordinating Commission, Governor Kotek, and SOU's Board of Trustees. Takes less than five minutes. You can also sign up for coalition updates via their recruitment form

I know there is a lot to advocate for right now in the world, but I think we can all understand what would happen if we lose SOU, and I would encourage you, and your organizations if appropriate, to take action.

Thanks,

Daniel Collay

Hi all,

Sorry for the extra email. Here is the link to the Deloitte report and all of the meetings SOU has held: https://sou.edu/president/path-to-fiscal-sustainability/

The most recent report is the one labeled "options document." There is also a recorded meeting linked alongside it, though fair warning, the first hour largely restates the problem before getting to new information.

Thanks,

Daniel

Thanks Daniel,
I also encourage folks, if you can make it work, to provide live verbal testimony during a HECC public meeting. It's quite easy to get signed up and they usually allow about 3 minutes from any member of the public. Today's meeting featured a couple SOU faculty members among the about 15 people who testified. I think the Commission and Director Cannon hearing directly from community members, alums, partners, etc. about the importance of investing in SOU would be powerful.
Here is a link to the HECC meetings page, where you can see the schedule of upcoming meetings. They usually post the agenda about a week before, and once that's there you can send an email to sign up for public testimony. You can also subscribe here to get notifications of upcoming meetings to your inbox.
