Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out to tap into the collective wisdom of this group.

At Siskiyou Field Institute, we’ll have about 150 youth coming through Outdoor School this spring, and we’re hoping to add owl pellet dissection to our evening program curriculum. We think it would be a great hands-on way to deepen learning on local owls and their diet

I was looking at online options (Amazon, etc.), the cost for enough pellets (around 60 total) is coming in at $200, which is beyond what we were hoping to spend.

I’m wondering if any of you have:

  • Tips for sourcing owl pellets more affordably

  • Local or regional suppliers you’ve used

  • Creative alternatives or adaptations that still meet learning goals

  • Or experience collecting/partnering locally in a responsible way

Any ideas or lessons learned would be hugely appreciated. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge—and for all the great work you all do!

This is where we source our pellets from: https://oregonowlpellets.com/products/owl-pellet-kit-of-100
They are probably about the same cost (looks maybe a smidge less), but we often have kids do their dissections in groups of two or three (there are often kids who are really excited and those who are pretty grossed out, so small groups work pretty well).  That brings the cost down a bit because you don't need as many pellets. We also have an evening program curriculum for nocturnal adaptations that we use that I am happy to share with you if you would like- it doesn't involve owl pellets- in case you decide you don't want to splurge for them.

Hello Hannah,
I am presently in Germany. Will be back in Oregon  for a few weeks in late February and early March. Might have some left over pellets in our shed. Try the Oregen Fish And Wildlife folks in Eagle Point. Also Klamath and/or Rogue River Audobon Society. I will  reach out to other bird friends and see what i can come up with to help out

Seems like you could probably get owl pellets for free from wildlife images??
