All,
Sorry I missed the meeting as I did have some items to report on. We (RVCOG and Rogue Valley Sewer Services (RVSS)) met with North Mountain Park regarding program possibilities for 2025–2026 primarily for the Salmon Watch Program (classes and training), but also to check in on use of the Park for other programs. At the meeting, we discussed a Salmon themed event (Return of the Salmon – Family Field Day) building on the Salmon Watch station activities with other stations as tie ins/partner stations from the open area between the restrooms and nature center to the creek. We are envisioning starting small and simple (no food, entertainment, etc.). We have reached out to a few of you regarding this Family Field Day that Kristina mentioned at the meeting. Please let us know if you are interested. We will plan to have at least one meeting to discuss the working vision for the Field Day. It will be on October 18th. The proposed description suggested for Ashland’s Recreation Guide is below.
We are also hosting a training for Salmon Watch instructors for anyone interested on September 11th and will have a full season this fall. We will be looking for volunteer and contracted instructors to help
Proposed programs descriptions for the Recreation guide. The final may look different:
Return of the Salmon - Family Field Day – Saturday, October 18th from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Missing the Salmon Festival this year? Come join us to celebrate the return of salmon to Bear Creek and enjoy learning about the watershed by participating in activities set up around the park and Bear Creek by local organizations! Bring the family to North Mountain Park to learn about salmon and their life cycle, macroinvertebrates, water quality, pollinators, and riparian areas by visiting educational, hands-on learning stations. This event is brought to you by the Stream Smart, the City of Ashland, the Rogue Valley Council of Governments, Rogue Valley Sewer Services, and others.
Salmon Watch Training
Rogue Basin Salmon Watch Training – Thursday, September 11th from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Do you enjoy teaching in the outdoors or have always wanted to do so? Are you familiar with healthy watersheds, the salmon life cycle, and like to work with kids? Come join the Rogue Valley Council of Governments and Rogue Valley Sewer Services for a day of learning about the longstanding Rogue Basin Salmon Watch program and how each field trip flows. Learn about salmon life cycle, aquatic insects, water quality, and riparian areas and how you can help us teach the program if you are interested (teaching a program is not required to attend). Sparkling water, juice, and snacks will be provided, but please bring a water bottle (or two) and a lunch. RSVP by Monday, September 8th: asied...@rvcog.org.
