Students and medical residents who are listed as the principal investigator (PI) on an IRB application are required to take a one-time, on-demand, e-learning tutorial about getting started with the IRB. The IRB 101 tutorial covers the basics of human subjects research and provides important practical information about navigating the IRB process at UW. The tutorial takes approximately 60 minutes to complete. HSD staff may begin application review before the training is completed, but the student or medical resident PI must provide verification that the training has been completed before an IRB application can be approved or given an exempt determination.

After completing the IRB 101 tutorial, you have the option to print a course certificate. You must save a copy of the completion certificate. The tutorial does not automatically provide HSD with records of course completion. The course certificate must be uploaded as a supporting document in your Zipline IRB application. HSD staff will verify that the certificate has been provided before the IRB application receives an exempt determination or IRB approval.

Student and resident researchers are typically the most inexperienced with conducting human subjects research and the least likely to be required to take human subjects training because of an external funding requirement. Adding an institutional requirement to complete the IRB 101 tutorial covers an important gap by providing IRB training to novice researchers who are not otherwise required to receive training on conducting human subjects research.

To complete the tutorial, you need a UW NetID and password, an Internet connection and internet enabled device (a computer works best), and the ability to save a document and upload it to Zipline (the electronic IRB system).

We recommend that you complete the tutorial in one session. However, if you need to pause and come back to the tutorial, you have the option to restart or resume. If you select resume, the tutorial will load the last slide that you viewed.

The online tutorial CORE-2022 (Course on Research Ethics) is an introduction to the TCPS 2 for the research community. It focuses on the TCPS 2 ethics guidance that is applicable to all research involving human participants, regardless of discipline or methodology.

IDL can be used interactively or in "batch" mode. There is an efficient command interpreter for interactive use, as well as the option of developing scripts which may be interpreted or compiled. There is also a graphical IDL development environment available using the command idlde which we will not discuss in this tutorial.

This tutorial is organized as a set of examples with explanations. This tutorial assumes that you are working in a directory named idl, that IDL programs are in a subdirectory named pro, and that data is in a subdirectory named dat. The examples used in this tutorial are available for download here Examples.

The most effective way for you to go through this tutorial is by running IDL in a separate window, and trying out the commands and programs as you read the tutorial. It should be kept in mind that this tutorial is only a glimpse at what you can do with IDL. Once you start using it, you will want to look at the online and/or hardcopy documentation, and explore.

Observe that array variables look just like scalar variables. IDL is designed to work on multi-dimensional arrays, and many operators work on arrays in "the natural way." We will see more on this later in the tutorial.

Type a question mark ? for online help. This will pop up a separate GUI for accessing IDL user information. (Note that typing "help" at the IDL prompt does something quite different - it gives you a list of all current variables and functions).

? As everything created by the GIMP project, these tutorials are fullycommunity-written. Therefore if you find any tutorial incomplete,or if it contains errors or outdated information, the best thing is tocontribute a fix. Moreover we warmly welcome new tutorials. See belowfor the full contributionprocedure.?

The only thing we ask of contributors is to use Libre licenses, whichallow anyone to share, redistribute and modify the tutorials. It enablesothers to fix tutorials, even years later, even if the original authoris not around anymore. This is the same rules as for our code, makingGIMP a Free Software.

So you want to contribute? The process is simple, here is an example forthe hypothetical case where you found an error in an existing tutorial. In such a case of editing existing text, your change will be automaticallyconsidered to be in the same license as chosen by the first author:

For more complicated changes, or if you want to propose new tutorials,it might be necessary to understand at least the basics of the gitsource versionning system we use.Alternatively, you may simply write your tutorial in a new text file onyour machine (following Markdown syntax), then simply open areportand upload all the files (the text file as well as images and otherresources) in this report. Do not forget to tell us the license youchose from the list given above.

An online tutorial is a self study activity designed to teach a specific learning outcome. They are usually delivered via Blackboard but can also be made available via the Internet or on a DVD. There are two main types of online tutorial which we refer to as Recorded and Interactive.

Recorded tutorials are video or screencast recordings, typically of a subject expert presenting information and ideas or giving a demonstration. Click here to see an example of a screencast created using Camtasia. The tutorial is designed to teach University of Bristol (UoB) members to how use the Library Catalogue to make a reservation. It consists of an audio narration over PowerPoint slides and a demonstration of the Catalogue software.

Interactive tutorials are a structured collection of navigable web pages. Individual pages can contain any combination of text, images, audio, video, self test questions and other interactive activities. Interactive tutorials can also contain screencasts. Click here to see an example of an interactive tutorial created using software Wimba Create.
