Hi, can somebody suggest what would be reasonable server requirements, in terms of the number of CPU cores, the amount of RAM, and the amount of disk space for a sophie server?

Thanks,
Elena Katok

Hi Elena,

this mainly depends on the number of concurrent users and type of experiment. Using a real-time market requires a lot of parallel connections to stay open at once and is still a challenge with SoPHIE. The only real way to give a good estimate for this is to run a simulation.

Still as commodity PC hardware is really cheap these days I would recommend to use a system with at least a quad-core cpu, 8 GB Ram and an SSD harddrive for the database. This should suffice for most scenarios in the lab (lets say up to 40 participants) but also for medium sized online experiments (up to a hundred users).

I would absolutely recommend running a linux system. A lot also depends on an optimized set up for the webserver especially for the case of online experiments over HTTPS. At SoPHIELabs we run a server supporting the new SPDY protocol which increases performance for HTTPS connections by quite an impressive factor. This alone allows for a shorted response time and therefore less processes working in parallel.

Best
