To help use less mobile data on a limited data plan, you can turn on Data Saver. This mode lets most apps and services get background data only via Wi-Fi. Currently active apps and services can use mobile data.

Trying to sort out if this is a Google Fi issue or an Android 12 issue. Just setup Galaxy S22U (unlocked), data saver enabled, almost all apps are disabled - including Spotify, which managed to use 95 MB during a 20-minute commute while I wasn't even using it. :-/ I did have Android Auto enabled for mobile data... thinking maybe this was the culprit? Does anyone have experience with this issue and managing your data? Obviously, I'm on the Flexible Plan... Thank you.

Not sure if it's Pixel specific, probably not? But I turned on the data saver mode, and only two apps have unrestricted access which are phone carrier services and Google services. I am currently traveling, so I am roaming and using pay as you go plan which is pay per day usage. So to minimize the bill I only want to use data for apps I open. And then download other stuff in the background on WiFi.

However when I turn on data, with data saver on other apps like FB, reddit, Gmail are still getting notifications. Why are they ignoring the data saver mode? Is it enforced on app level as in each app has to implement compliance or OS level?

I've come across a strange bug after upgrading to a OnePlus 6T today, and I wanted to make support aware of it. From a fresh install and sign in, I go to settings and see that data saver is turned off as I want it to be. However, upon scrolling down to change my streaming quality for both WiFi and data to Very High, data streaming is capped to low and I cannot change it, as if Data Saver was turned on.

Scrolling back up then shows data saver is now turned on. Turning it back off and scrolling back down to the stream quality settings then remains locked, and looping back up shows that the option for data saver has once again been turned on without my permission. Uninstalling and logging out and back in does not fix this issue. As I was typing up the post, I then found out that taking my device into landscape mode, and turning off the data saver option, then allows me to change streaming quality. Changing back to portrait for any reason whatsoever then resets this, which is very irritating as you guys could imagine. Hopefully this information will help nail down this bug!

I had same problem on my Pixel 2XL with Android Pie. I tried to change to landscape and turn off data saver that I rolled out the streaming menu and during this I changed to portrait and set the very high quality. After that I am able to set it even in portrait mode and data saver is still off.

I couldn't use Spotify in landscape so i tried to turn off new features in the settings thought maybe it resets data saver. If i turn off car view i can turn off data saver, but then i can't turn data saver on only if car view is on.

Keep in mind that the features and settings in Spotify are subject to change with app updates, so it's always a good idea to check the latest version of the app or the Spotify website for any specific settings or options related to audio quality and data usage.
Keep me pupdated,

Thanks for posting, we understand your concern and will do our best to try to provide a few recommendations for you to optimize your data usage. Unfortunately, the Video Data Extender was found to be causing issues for many customers so that is why the feature was discontinued - however we do hope to be able to reimagine it and have a similar feature in the future.

As many have posted, the data extender was great for many, those that had issues could just turn it off. Bring it back for us that loved it. And yes if you have recommendations that will help please do. Thanks.

Hi @jawebb19, I took a look at your data usage and noticed that most of it comes from streaming services. Here is an article describing how to manually change your video settings in some of the most popular streaming platforms - How do I manually set video quality at streaming video sites?

We too are Cheering Loudly for the return of Data Saver. Since it was disabled our data went thru the ROOF. Hats off to Leo and all other Admins that have assisted.
Thinking about the Cutomers who disliked. Yes. Very easy. Turn it OFF. No for us who now must try to minimize data - we have a much greater burden - resetting the resolution - sometimes by each application. Get an update. Gotta go change resolution again.
So it sure seems the Easiest and Simplest fix for cutomers that had issues was just turn it off.
How about Admins conduct a Poll among customers here on Forum?

If you leave your carrier's coverage area, you may still be able to access mobile data by enabling Data roaming. Most carriers work together to allow you to connect to other networks, even outside of the United States.

Video Data Saver (VDS) does not work when streaming Hallmark Movies Now (HMN) videos. With the HMN Video Quality set to Low and VDS set to ON, the data usage during a 90 minute video is around 3GB instead of the typical 0.6-0.7GB when the stream is from other sources such as Prime, YouTube, etc. What could be causing this issue?

Thanks for reaching out! A couple brief questions about this case, so we can take a deeper look into this. How long have you been using the Hallmark Movies Now service? Has this service always consumed a larger amount of data, or is this an issue you noticed recently?

Lastly, you might want to also use Glasswire on the computer while doing this. Glasswire will show you what apps/processes are using data, and just how much of it. This way you can rule out anything else using data at the same time. It only shows the usage of the device it's installed on, so if another device on your network is using data, it won't show that.

Currently I am streaming Hallmark Movies Now videos using a smart TV and made sure the HMN Video Quality was set to Low. I also contacted Hallmark eCare about the problem and was told there was no way they could lower the amount of data. Their suggestion was to use a 3rd party but I would like to avoid that if at all possible.

I wonder if there is a way to find out if Data Saver is enabled and potentially if my app is on the 'Unrestricted data access' list to know if push notifications are enabled for my app and therefore if there is a point in waiting for the push and a chance to execute any network calls while the app is in the background at a certain time.

When Data saver is on and Wi-Fi isn't available, some apps and services may not be able to send and receive data in the background. To avoid this, you can select apps and services that will continue receiving background data via mobile data although Data saver is on.

Web browsing is still one of the most common ways to access the Internet. Many browsers have data-saving features available. Some examples include Google Chrome, Mint Browser, UC Browser Mini, Opera Mini, and Phoenix Browser. They compress data, lower the resolution of images, and sometimes omit parts of the website altogether. The result is lower data usage. Some other browsers have ad blocker add-ons that also lower data usage by not loading intrusive ads. Make sure these options are on so you can save data.

Android Go is a boon for data savers around the globe. It spurned a bunch of Lite and Go apps that are smaller, lighter, and use less data. Some popular options include Facebook Lite, Spotify Lite (in some regions), Facebook Messenger Lite, Gmail Go, YouTube Go (in some regions), and UC Browser Mini. These apps not only run quickly and lightly, but also generally use less data than their full-size counterparts. You can download them all for free. However, some, like Spotify Lite, still have their usual subscription prices.

Basically, this allows you to limit background data used by apps, but whitelist anything that want to have unrestricted access. This means background data is disabled for every app by default, then you can pick and choose where to grant unlimited access

From Android 7.0 (API level 24), users can enable Data Saver on a device-wide basis in order to optimize their device's data usage, and use less data.
...
When a user enables Data Saver in Settings and the device is on a metered network, the system blocks background data usage and signals apps to use less data in the foreground wherever possible.

Databack offers several outstanding features that enhance your mobile data experience. With its Data Saver functionality, you can save an impressive 25% of your mobile data on a daily basis. By simply installing Databack, using your favorite apps, and enjoying their features, you can effortlessly conserve your precious mobile usage.

Another remarkable feature is Spin & Win 3G/4G, which allows you to participate in a wheel-spinning game to win up to 50MB of daily bonus data. It adds an element of excitement to your mobile usage, granting you additional usage rewards.

Mobile internet data can be expensive, especially if you spend a lot of time out of range of Wi-Fi signals. Things get worse when you realize how many apps use internet data in the background even when they're closed.

While Data Saver is on, if an app is running in the background, it won't be able to connect to the internet. This means that it won't receive updates, won't send you push alerts, and won't take any of your data. This mode is great if you've used up a lot of your monthly data.

Note: On other Android phones, the process might be slightly different. If you have a Samsung phone, go to Settings > Connections > Data usage > and Mobile data usage. Tap the specific app you want to restrict data for and toggle off Allow background data usage.
