  1. What is config module vs. config template?  Am I using module or template or both?

Config module allows you to set individual GPIO for whatever you need (normally on something like an ESP8266 development board. The templates are, essentially, saved configurations for specific devices to save the effort of setting up the GPIOs

  1. How do I figure out which GPIOs stand for which feature(s) on my device?  e.g. the LED light or the motion sensor etc

You need to look at this page for TuYa set up and configuration https://tasmota.github.io/docs/TuyaMCU-Devices/

  1. If I have the GPIOs figured out, how do I go about controlling them?  I am thinking Rules and/or Option and/or the Configure Modules/Templates might come into play here, but where exactly do I find out where the pieces all fit together?  e.g.  I read this page https://templates.blakadder.com/DP-WP001.html and I am totally confused by things like 'Rule1 on TuyaReceived#data=55AA000000010101 do Power ON ENDON' or 'SetOption66 1' etc... I am not even sure if this is the right info for my device.

You can use MQTT, websends or the webui to control the outputs as well as Rules and Timers

  1. How do I even go about enabling the power control unit to stop supplying power to the ESP8266ex when no motion is detected?

You wouldn’t want to stop the power to the ESP but, I think, control an output. You may also want to, for instance, send an MQTT message to tell you motion has been detected.

  1. Do I even have the right firmware installed?  Right now I have the basic tasmota.bin but I realize there are other version like tasmota-lite.bin etc etc.

Yes, you almost certainly have the right firmware. Sensors, lite etc are used for specific circumstances. The desciptions are her https://tasmota.github.io/docs/Builds/#firmware-variants

Read the docs there are lots of useful tips and ideas. If you get stucksomeone will appear here to help.

Good luck

Subject: Noob Tasmota setup help with a battery powered PIR sensor

Hi all,

Trying out Tasmota for the very first time.  Already spent days trying to flash Tasmota into this little PIR motion detector and I finally cracked it today.  So by now I am already feeling a little exhausted (but really happy).

I got this very cheap from AliExpress...  apparently it does not have a brand name, but it runs on Tuya firmware and it tested ok with the Tuya Smart Home app when I originally unpacked it.  I took some pics of the device here:

Of course I now see the Tasmota main menu finally, but with that comes a lot of big question marks..  simply put, just how do I configure the device to do the following:

1.  Retain its basic function obviously - once motion is detected, send an event to MQTT broker/server that I will be setting up (once I get this thing to trigger MQTT events, I think I will be good to go from there).

2.  Hopefully light up that blue LED like it originally does (with stock firmware) for one second or two when it detects motion

3.  Retain its original behavior to conserve battery power by shutting down all but the essential motion detection function when it doesn't sense any motion (with Tasmota running and no config done - I have no clue how it is done yet hence this post - it basically 'stays constantly on' and I can ping it anytime)

What I have done so far is I have basically followed https://tasmota.github.io/docs/Getting-Started/ to get to where I am - flashed the device and I can access the main menu, the console screen to enter commands, etc.  But I am getting really confused by things like

1.  What is config module vs. config template?  Am I using module or template or both?

2.  How do I figure out which GPIOs stand for which feature(s) on my device?  e.g. the LED light or the motion sensor etc

4.  How do I even go about enabling the power control unit to stop supplying power to the ESP8266ex when no motion is detected?

5.  Do I even have the right firmware installed?  Right now I have the basic tasmota.bin but I realize there are other version like tasmota-lite.bin etc etc.

I guess basically I need to locate where the "beginners guide after flashing" info is if there is one... (sorry if this is actually FAQ, but I have tried searching for one to no avail)

Any pointers appreciated !!!  Much thanks.
