Hi guys,

over the weekend I stumbled over espurna (https://github.com/xoseperez/espurna) - a different firmware for our Sonoff (and other ESP8266 based) devices than Tasmota which seems to be the better known here.

Has anyone looked into that and has perhaps compared features, etc?

Regards,

Listen both Tasmota & ESPurina suck in their own rights and look like toys compared to ESPeasy..
Configure just ONE ESPeasy then make a backup copy then use that to flash your devices with..
ESPeasy you can make INTERNAL rules, so for serious things that CAN fail if wifi dropped during a cycle or just dropped, your internal timers and logic make the device SAFE
I made this post, it took time and has not even got a response - "like sorry, it can not be done" ....etc
https://github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/issues/1991
Save Tasmota for on/off of your Christmas or porch light, if it's a complex interesting task, use an ADULT firmware

From link posted above posted by ER
"I personally found ESPEasy too unstructured and too loose for mass production (aka daily use), but on the other hand, I love it when it comes to experiments with new hardware and new stuff, exactly because of the freedom and configurability it gives you. It has very open but very powerful run-time configuration capabilities and is most advanced when it comes to local decision making, potentially reducing the need for MQTT broker and external automation logic."

Hi
I am using both ESPeasy and ESPurna in production in my house on Sonoff TH & POW units and ESP8266 D1 mini's.
Today I installed Tasmota on a POW unit and was, well disappointed.   I've seen a lot of references to it, so though I'd try it.  Can I say I won't be replacing ESPurna anytime soon.

I have shorted the relay contacts on my POW units as I'm only using them to monitor power & voltage.  This way I can have the relay off, avoiding a continuous Red led glow.
I was disappointed that I can't do this on Tasmota, I had to have relay on as measurements are not taken when it is off!
Why don't you measure the voltage when it is off?  Why does it have to be "on" to measure?

I'm not interested in hacking the code, that's why I'm using prebuilt software.  I originally started out writing my own, but quickly realised that my project wasn't in writing code, but about Home Automation.
Again that is why I use Domoticz.  Code cracking isn't the end goal, nor do I want crashing software all over the house.  I just want measurement and control.

I use ESPurna for my Sonoff units around the house and find it has a very good web setup and config pages.  I've never "lost" a Sonoff or had one hang or bricked.  Tasmota almost bricked a Sonoff unit today.
All units send their data to a Domoticz server hosted on Amazon Ec2 which will soon be a Raspberry Pi or similar as I've exhausted my 12 month freebie on Amazon.

The ESP8266 D1 mini's run ESPeasy as they have various temperature and humidity sensors.  Again no hang on the current firmware ESP 20000 - Mega v2.0.0-dev9

Some features I like -
  • I can determine the IP settings on the units, without using DHCP in my router.
  • ESPeasy & ESPurna both have fallback Wifi ability
  • All fully web based setup, ESPEasy, ESPurna  & Domoticz
  • Stable software, ESPeasy, ESPurna & Domoticz
  • Don't need to find and hand code config files
Bottom line, this is what I use.  It may not suit you or others.  If you don't mind configuring files, then there are lots of other options.
If you are a developer, you will of course recommend the ones you contribute to.
But if you just want something that is easy to setup via say a web page, then I suggest Domoticz, ESPeasy and ESPurna.
