I don't know about "darker," but I do feel there's some compression grittiness too the sound of my  
 mixes when they are played over Sonobus. I think that is probably to be expected when data is shipped over almost any sort of line. It might be interesting to send a pink noise signal and analyze it.

Well, since there are a lot of variables involved, any statement like this needs to include the exact settings involved, primary the send quality control. That one particular can go from “total crap, should never be used”, to “32 bit float - exactly like it never left your DAW”. :)
