Hi,

Thanks for building such a great software and I had good experience running it on Windows 10.   I would like to install Sonobus on my Ubuntu Studio 20.04 LTS system.  I am a novice on Ubuntu and Linux and definitely need help. I followed the snap approach on the website and entered the command in the terminal:   sudo snap install sonobus

It seems to download and install fine but I have no idea of what to do next to run Sonobus and make it an app on he desktop.  Can someone help me to list out the steps and commands to follow? Many thanks.

Hi, Peter,
As you can see a few days ago I posted a remark that the Snap for Sonobus on Linux Mint does not work. Mint is Ubuntu based, so it would not surprise me that your version does not work either.
In the end I ended up Compiling Sonobus from source, which works but I did find the instructions a bit fuzzy. As an experienced Linux user, I could deal with this, as a novice, I think it would be good to find a compiling friend. The compiling itself is not so hard but you need to know your way around your system.
Good luck, I hope someone picks up the faulty Snap thread!
Kind regards,
Wendy

I did pretty much the same thing, installing ubuntu on a thumb drive.  I opened the terminal and ran the snap command.  Then I found the sonobus icon/app by clicking in the lower left to view all applications.  You have to enable your internet connection, at least I did when I was on wifi.
You're probably the same as me in that I should have read some basic "getting started with ubuntu" documents first.  I haven't pursued it further because my main interest was to see if ubuntu consumed less of my laptop's resources, but as it turns out Sonobus uses very little even under Windows.

Thanks to Wendy and Randy for the heads up re Snap install.  Following Randy's suggestion, I found the Sonobus icon inside the All Application folder.  I clicked on the icon but nothing happened.  Are there further steps to take to enable the app?  I played with the right mouse click and selected the
Edit Application of  this icon.  In the command box this is shown

env BAMF_DESKTOP_FILE_HINT=/var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/sonobus_sonobus.desktop /snap/bin/sonobus

I also tested to enable the Options "run in terminal"  but Sonobus still not launched.  What should I do?

I unfortunately did not manage to do anything with the Snap Install - and installed from source.
Has the Snap Install been updated?
Fingers crossed!
🤞

kind regards,
Wendy

The snap build has been updated, but if you have successfully built it from source and it is working, then you can choose to do it again with the most recent update from github.

Ok, great news! Thanks!

I'm not a fan of too many programmes installed from source - dependency spaghetti avoidance..

Even greater news is that we are testing and setting up a repository for native Debian packages to make things work even smoother and avoid the issues with Snap being kind of sandboxed (and only working with jackd1).

We’ll post about that here shortly.

Thank you Jesse.  The updated Snap build works perfectly for me now. Clicking Sonobus under All Applications now opens the application just as expected.  The new version with the local monitoring delay feature is a great compensation tool for the "less optimal connection" to play more or less in sync with others.

I just have an experience to share and maybe there is an explanation.  It took me a while to get my Behringer UMC404 USB interface to sound (in or out). In the Audio setup, I choose ALSA and a long selection list is presented under Input and Output.  The confusing part is that I have to choose "2 channels front speakers"  for both the Output and Input selection to work. I was expecting "Mic" and NOT "Speaker" under the Input dropdown list. Nevertheless the selection gets sound.  Then I click the Test button to check the interface.  The test tone has a lot of distortion and cracking.  I need to play with the sampling rate and buffer size combination to get the test tone to stabilize.  At the end I need to set it to 48K and 16 samples to make the tone sound right. Bigger sample size will crack.  However I am pretty sure I had started with that combination (48K / 16 ) but still get a distorted tone.  It seems to me that changing it a couple of times will let the program learn the correct values.  Is this normal or is there something I am missing in setting up my interface?
