I’ve been using Sonobus for quite a long time with great results and many live streamed collaborations with folks in many places.
However, in the last few weeks i’ve developed a connection issue that I’m struggling to solve

Technical info

Standalone version (up to date) on OSX Mojave V10.146
Macbook pro 15” 2.3 GHZ
Connection to BT Hub via ethernet

Sonobus seems unable to connect via the ethernet cable
The speed using the cable is all fine
Other software works fine
I can connect to the Wifi in my studio which is connected to the hub via ethernet

I’ve tried

1: Swapping the cables
2: Connecting directly into the router (not via the 50m CAT 6 cable to the studio)
3: Using another computer
4: Disconnecting everything apart from the machine running Sonobus
5: The usual rebooting of computer , router etc

But the problem persists.
No new equipment has been installed on the network

Any ideas of what to try next ?
Plugin version ?
Manually assigning ports ? (out of my comfort zone there)

It seems strange as it all worked perfectly until recently

Any suggestions most welcome

Thanks

Have you tried disabling wifi completely while using the ethernet cable?

Are you having troubles connecting to other people outside your local network, or are you trying to test between computers in your house?

Exactly what errors or messages are you seeing and when?

Hi there
yes, i’ve tried disabling WIfi but still no connection with ethernet
I’m usually connecting to Simon Limbrick in Norfolk and Adrian Lee in London for the Comb Filter trio thing
but also other folks

It’s puzzling because it was working perfectly until a few weeks ago

I when I turn off Wifi I get a time out message as it doesn’t seem to be finding a port on the router

Thanks

Can you take a screenshot with the error showing?

Hmm, if you are getting that then I would expect you to have issues with internet in a browser and other applications as well. That error signifies that a TCP connection to the connection server can't be made, which is the "easy" part. If it isn't working but your web browser works, it could indicate some new behavior in your router that is preventing outgoing connections to "non-standard" port numbers, which is highly unusual.

If you disconnect your ethernet, and turn ON wifi, does SonoBus get past that error?

I guess the next step is to see your network configuration when using ethernet with wifi disabled, for instance screenshots of your system preferences->Network page, with the Ethernet item selected.

HI there
Thanks for the help

I’m not getting issues with the internet, i’m able to browse and send / receive files etc

With the ethernet disconnected and Wifi on it gets past and I can connect to others (with massive latency as one would imagine)

Which network configuration would be useful to see ?

screenshots of the router firewall configuration would also be useful to check out that non-standard outbound ports thingy.

are you running any kind of network monitoring software like Little Snitch that might be filtering those packets?

Possibly take a look at your Preferences/Security/Firewall options on both Macs.

Did you do an update (either to Sonobus or other apps) recently?

(What is the BT hub? Bluetooth? Switch? Router? —possibly check the router LAN settings for blocked traffic ports.
Are you using a VPN? I had some issues with my VPN not 'releasing' when I quit the app. i.e. The VPN held on to the old (VPN) IPaddress. I ultimately changed providers.)

Thanks for solving this
So, for those who might have the same issue
The issue was all to do with the ethernet settings on the Mac
For some reason the

Configure IPv4 setting was OFF
turning it on solved everything

So… back to working fine and just did a test with Simon in Norfolk with low latency , no issues and clean signals
