SFA NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 2008
Song For Africa Updates:
SFA Documentary on City TV - September 27th at 8 pm:
The Song For Africa Documentary hit the airwaves on City TV on Sept.
27th at 8pm. This was a huge feat for us! We hope you were to watch
this amazing and beautiful short film and got as many people you know
to watch it as well!
SFA CEO Travels to Africa:
SFA’s founder and CEO, Darcy Ataman, will be heading back to Africa
this October to help with the opening of our new Song For Africa
Elementary School. The school is set to open its doors in November.
While there, he will be personally checking up on all of our projects
on the ground.
SFA Scholarship Recipients:
SFA prides itself in the good we are doing in Africa. One of our major
ongoing projects is the SFA Scholarship Fund. So far we have been able
to sponsor four students in the Masai Mara in Kenya, and we are happy
to report that they are all doing quite well and are flourishing
thanks to your generous donations. To read more about the scholarship
and to donate to the fund, visit our website at

‘The Agonist’ Supports Song For Africa:
Montreal rockers ‘The Agonist’ have launched their new merch line with
60% of its proceeds going to SFA! Their t-shirts are printed on
organic cotton and fabricated in a sweat-shop free facility in
Bethlehem - a factory whose initiative has the active support of the
Palestinian & the Israeli foreign ministries. Please take the time to
check them out at

Recap of Recent Events:
Visual Arts Sale in Montreal – July 25th 2008:
Montreal artists joined forces by donating original artwork this
summer to help raise funds for Song For Africa. The event held at Bar
Blizzarts on St-Laurent was livened by local DJ George Vlamakis and
hosted by MC MoeCash. We raffled off prizes donated by local small
businesses and raised a good amount of money for our cause.
OSHEAGA - August 3rd & 4th 2008:
As many of you know, (since we met at this amazing two day event!) -
Song For Africa set up an info booth at this year's OSHEAGA Music
Festival and had a great and successful time. We raised awareness, got
our name out, and raised a few bucks towards our grassroots
operations. We hope to do it again next year.
Celebrity Rock Climbing Fundraiser – September 12th 2008:
The original plan for this event was to go skydiving, but
unfortunately we aren’t able to control the weather… yet. So although
the event was rained out, we were able to salvage the day and get
everyone together to go rock climbing. We were still able to raise
awareness and funds with the help of Faber Drive, Choclair and Billy
Talent and their admirable determination to help SFA. We spent the day
taking turns climbing a wall to illustrate SFA’s “uphill battle”
against the AIDS pandemic. ET Canada was there to document it all and
a great time was had by everyone. All the proceeds from this event
went to our collaborative project with Free The Children to build a
much needed hospital in Kenya as well as to the SFA Scholarship Fund.
Song For Africa Documentary Release Party – September 23rd 2008:
Musicians who were involved in the original CD single (Ian D'sa (Billy
Talent), Damhnait Doyle, Luke McMaster & Simon Wilcox) traveled to
Kenya in the summer of 2007 to capture everyday stories from those
affected by the AIDS pandemic and to further SFA's mission to raise
awareness.
SFA had its release party for the documentary at Tattoo Rock Parlour
in Toronto on the evening of September 23rd 2008. We had a great
turnout for the screening which included all of the artists who were
in the documentary, the other members from Billy Talent, Choclair,
members from The Trews, and even one of the kids from “Degrassi – the
next Generation”. Everyone had a great time and helped raise funds for
SFA. You can catch some of the interviews from the evening on CTV's
eTalk on Friday Sept. 26th at 7pm.
Upcoming Events for Song For Africa:
Art Auction for SFA and SKETCH:
In collaboration with TakingITGlobal, SFA will be hosting a series of
art workshops at Sketch in Toronto, a drop-in centre for street youth.
The purpose of this event will be to create a link, on the topic of
the AIDS pandemic, between Canadian youth and the continent of Africa.
Through these workshops, involved youth and Canadian musicians will
get together to create artwork representing their thoughts and
concerns on the issue. The artwork will then be showcased in a
vernissage in Toronto – date TBD. Proceeds from this event will
benefit both the centre and SFA.
