Singers,

Hope your summer is rolling along beautifully, filled with sunshine, music, and all good things.

We had an awesome time at Darden's last week.  The view was breathtaking- it was so nice to be there in the light and to watch darkness descend over Blake Island as we sang the sun down.  Thank you Darden for sharing your home and for accompanying us. We were in good voice and the music was a real lift. There were 12 of us there and it was just great!

Some of these songs we sing....oh my...when you listen to the words, and feel your heart opened by the music....oh my!  ...

Four strong winds that blow lonely, seven seas that run high, All those things that don't change, come what may...Clouds and storms will in time pass away, The sun again will shine bright and clear....I get by with a little help from my friends....Love has made a circle that holds us all inside; Where strangers are as family, loneliness can't hide....So how can you tell me you're lonely, And say for you that the sun don't shine?.....Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows, Lies the seed that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose....All shall be well I'm telling you, let the winter come and go, All shall be well again, I know...Still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest...But whoever treasures freedom, Like the swallow will learn to fly....When the shadows of this life have gone, I'll fly away, like a bird from prison bars has flown, I'll fly away....Though from out our bourne of time and place the flood may bear me far, I hope to see my pilot face to face when I have crossed the bar....So close your eyes, You can close your eyes, its all right

And on and on. And there are the silly songs, and the jazzy songs, and the rousing songs, and the blues, and the rounds with beautiful harmony.  It is so much fun to sing with a group! Come join us if you can.  It is casual, just show up. No RSVPs needed. Come when you can, leave when you need to, bring Rise Up Singing if you have it.

I have gotten things a little confused lately, sorry about that. The next planned song circle is at Judy Brown's- on the beach in front of her house, weather permitting, on Aug 14, the second Thurs as usual.  I will send an email closer to the date with directions as a reminder.

I will try to remember to ask you to remind me to send the reminder in case I forget ;-)

I was mistaken when I wrote that it was on Aug 7th.  Since the14th is 3 weeks away, due to 5 Thurs in July, there was some talk about having an extra song circle on Aug 7th. (Linda?) I will let you know.  And after that is August 28th, the 4th Thurs. Anyone want to host?

Thanks so much!
Maria

Hi Singers!

Lucky us, we can gather at Linda's on Thurs the 7th, so come on down.  She will be there with her guitar so let us join her and spend a lovely summer evening singing.  Come when you can, leave when you have to.  Bring Rise Up Singing if you have it.  See you there!

One more shameless self promotion.  I am leading a Women's Transformational Kayak Journey- Aug 9-11.  Please pass this on to anyone who you think might be interested.  It is going to be a very special adventure.

Thanks tons!

Last week was an amazing evening at Linda's- enjoying the yard, each other, the songs, and the wonder of singing together! Thanks Linda and thanks to all who came.  There were 7 of us and it was a delightful time.

This Thursday, we sing at Judy's and this is from her:

I am ready to receive you all on Thursday,  August 14th.  I checked the tide calendar to see if the tide was going to be high and it is.   This means people probably will not be able to walk to our beach shelter from Fay Bainbridge state park which would help with the shortage of places to park at the bottom of our driveway.   However. here are directions.  There may still be a detour on Sunrise Drive between Day Road and Torvanger Road, so... come on Hiway 305 to Day road and turn right up the hill (east).  Carry on on Day road to North Madison (by the school)  and turn left onto North Madison. Go only to you come around a curve and are at the next road and a white church.  Turn right on Torvanger until you reach Sunrise Drive and must turn.   Turn left onto Sunrise Drive and proceed to 14906 and three mail boxes on the right and turn down our driveway.  At the bottom of the driveway we will try to have someone to direct your parking using our drive and the neighbors driveway.  People will be able to park in a row in front and behind each other.  If they want to be sure to be able to get out they could park up at the road and walk down the driveway.

We will have a fire in the shelter and sit on logs under the shelter's roof.  The tide is probably going to be too high to actually sit on the sandy part of the beach.   We'll see.  There is a trail to the beach that requires walking shoes and willing walkers.  Bring flashlights for the finish.   Other groups have enjoyed the setting and methinks we will this time.  If you want, bring a lightweight chair to sit on instead of a log.    Judy Brown

PS In case of rain we will gather in my living room to sing.

My ground line phone is 206 842  3772.  My cell which I will have with me is 206 849 0239.

See you there!!!

This sounds amazing:

Hi Maria and all the others who are feeling hearty!

This is an email from Judy Brown which I hope Maria will forward to her mailing list.

It's Wednesday morning and I have just come back from the beach where I went to see if things were basically dry under the shelter where we will be singing tomorrow, Thursday night.  I particularly hope someone will come and play a guitar.

The path from my house to what they call "low bank" beach is a bit wet, but not muddy.  I will build a fire in the shelter because the tide is going to be high and will not  leave room for a fire on the beach in front of the shelter.  We can bring chairs or pillows or blankets to sit on the logs  which are under the roof of the shelter.  It's about a five minute walk to the beach from my house along a fern-clad, walkable trail.  Someone who comes early can help me by directing the parking. up near my house. For the finish if its dark bring a flashlight .

If its raining hard I'll build a fire in my living room and we'll sing there.  The address is 14906 Sunrise Drive.  The driveway (about 1/4 mile North of Fay Bainbridge Park) goes off to the right by three mail boxes.

I sense that we  need to sing for comfort in the wake of the terrible things happening in the world!  Hope some of you agree.      Judy Brown

Please write Judy directly with questions, RSVPs and let her know if you are bringing a guitar: Judy Brown <jubr...@gmail.com>

See you soon!

Hi singers!

Well sadly I missed a very special evening at Judy's last week.  Here is what Mary texted me about it:  "Hi. It was intimate & lovely. We were 5. Judy made a fire under her beach shelter, so we were warm & cozy, singing just a few feet from the high tide. A couple of otters even swam by to check us out :-)  We finished the evening by pulling some old Girl Scout songs out of our memories after the light became too dim to see our books.  And we sang a few lovely rounds as our grand finale- including Rose, Rose, Rose, Rose, and Dona Nobis Pace.  We even remembered our parting song ;-)"

Doesn't that sound wonderful!  Darn, I am so sorry I missed it.  But yes, there is more to come.  Thurs 28th at Mary's on Point White Drive! Don't miss it, it will be great!  She will have to send me the directions and then I will send them out to you when I get home on Wed 27th.  That is cutting it close for a reminder, so just in case, put the date on your calendar now, email Mary for directions: Mary White Peters <mwhite...@gmail.com>,  plan on going and I will see you there.  I don't think I will have access to email until I get home.

I am going on a one week paddle adventure with a friend, heading out of Tofino.  Am hoping for good weather.  I mean I am really hoping for good weather.  It will make all the difference.  So think of me and don't think wind, surf, fog, bears, tide rips or anything like that think: sun, calm, gorgeous wilderness, easy landings, good tent sites, safe passages.  I will see you at Mary's when I return and will tell tales of my hopefully not too exciting trip.

From Mary:
Hi all,

RE:  THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, SONG CIRCLE

Here are directions to Mary's place - 4804 Crystal Springs DR NE:

Driving down Lynwood Center Road from town, turn right onto Baker Hill Road.  Go up and over the hill & continue till the road ends in a "T" intersection with Crystal Springs Drive.  Turn left onto Crystal Springs.  Port Orchard Bay will be on your right.  And my house is the first house you'll come to that sits close to the road - about a quarter mile down on the left just after you pass a few acres of open space Parks & Rec land.  It's an old blue house with a big front porch.  Parking is limited so carpooling is helpful.  I do have two extra spaces at my house for those who need closer access & there's room for a few cars to park along the road.

Optional route to get to my house along the beach road (takes a little longer, but it's "the scenic route"):  From Lynwood Center Road, at The Treehouse restaurant, turn right onto Point White Drive.(The road continues along the water & the name changes to Crystal Springs Drive.)  At about 2.7 miles from The Treehouse, my house will be on your right - the last one before the Parks & Rec open space property.  (If you get to the intersection with Baker Hill Road, you've gone 1/4 mile too far.)

My contact # is 206-551-1596.

From Maria:
I am back from my kayak trip- an amazing journey, we paddled from Tofino to Hot Springs Cove, through all kinds of conditions- dense pea soup fog, having to navigate from island to island with a compass and chart- lost in a swirl of grayness- couldn't see a thing!  Very unsettling, so glad I had my fog horn as motor boats would appear out of the gloom, zooming off to their destination following their radar.  We camped on wild beaches and woke to bear prints in the sand. We landed in surf and rounded points where the ocean swells crashed on the rocks and the sea was boiling.  We made it to Hot Springs Cove and camped two nights there in the sweet comfort of a primitive campground in a deep inlet, knowing that we had arrangements with a water taxi to carry us back to Tofino.  The hot springs were fabulous- hot steamy water and then the cool ocean pours in with the tide.  I sat for hours gazing at the amazing scenery and soaking my tired bones.  My body is not so sure it liked the trip but my spirit is very grateful for the infusion of wilderness.

See you at Mary's!!!

Hi singers,
What a fabulous evening at Mary's last week.  Her home is so special, built in stages a hundred years ago, starting life as a fishing cabin.  On Chrystal Springs Drive, it has the beautiful water view, and the lovely pink sky as the sun set.  It was homey and cozy and we were a group of twelve, singing without accompaniment, and really enjoying ourselves and the sweet space. We really got down, let loose, and got in a groove- it was very very fun.

The next circle will be at Carol Shakow and Mel Lieman's home in the mobile home park- Thurs, Sept 11 at 7 pm.  Bring Rise Up Singing if you have it, come when you can, leave when you want to, and let me know if you want to be removed from this list or if anyone wants to be added.  I will be out of town so won't be there, but it is always awesome, so don't miss it!

Cheers,

Maria Cook

This Thurs at Carol's 7PM!  Hope you can make it!

Take Madison Ave to Madrona Way- the small street directly across from the Pavilion movie marquee, just a bit south of the stop sign on Wyatt Way.  Go east and pass two streets which turn south into the mobile home park.  Carol lives on the third street, the second mobile home on the right, #515. Park in the vacant lots just off Madrona Way and walk down to her house.  She does have some parking in her driveway and in front of her house if you have instruments or need to park close by.  Her number: 780-1746.

Have a great time- will miss you!  Hope to see you across the street at Lisa Giles on 25th for our next circle.

Maria
